HISTORY:

The venerable Garrard AT60, part of the Laboratory Series. I have included the photograph for "memories sake" - that retail price is US$ and does NOT include the base or the cartridge selected by the buyer. In "today's money" you are looking at a US$800 (approximate estimate) basic turntable - these were not el-cheapo chappies!

Very sad to see yet another very nice old English Garrard turntable become an 'organ donor' but at least this component may have a use to another Garrard enthusiast/restorer out there somewhere!

An interesting point about the 60 MKII, they were a four speed turntable - not that common even in those days and impossible to find in contemporary turntables. They ran at 16-33-45 & 78rpm - nice if you need this speed flexibility

Extracted from the Laboratory Series 60 MKII, which in a moment of madness lost it's head! Without the headshell and cartridge the turntable was pretty useless to me so it has become an organ donor.

While the turntable was a nicely engineering machine, there were "other issues" such as a broken tone arm rest - dratted plastic rears it's ugly head ...

So, let's get on with describing the spare part I am offering here - remember, I am offering 'organs' from the turntable, the 60 MKII is now a 'non-turntable', it is no more ... ceases to exist because I have carefully and completely dismantled it!

NOTE: Keep in mind that many Garrard turntable parts from this era are interchangeable with other GARRARD models (and even some DUAL's I believe) - PLEASE CHECK YOUR SERVICE MANUAL TO ESTABLISH THE SUITABILITY OF THIS PART TO YOUR OWN TURNTABLE.

GARRARD 60 MKII TURNTABLE - AC Synchronous Motor, Terminal Block, Plunger Switch & Motor Rubber Mounts with hardware ONLY

This is a great little bundle of the electrical drive system from the 60 MKII. Too many separate components to list all the part numbers but I will give basic indentification information.

I have left all interconnections in place (the wiring) and it is currently set to run on 240V AC - with the changing of straps at the terminal block you can run on 110V fine but remember to change the motor pulley for 60Hz operation otherwise your speeds will not be correct.

These Laboratory Series motors are superb with plenty of torque to run both the platter and the automatic mechanism, smooth very low noise operation and extremely reliable. At the time in the 1960's ~ 1970's these motors from Garrard were held in very high regard. I seem to remember seeing some models of DUAL also using these.

Look at the photographs, that is EVERYTHING that I will send the buyer. Sorry if you only wanted just the plunger switch or even just the terminal block but I wanted to offer this as a complete, fully functional assembly.

In brief, these are the components:

1) Synchronous Induction Drive Motor

110 or 240V operation (60/50Hz)

Remember to change the motor pulley to the Brass coloured model for 60Hz operation (part 58650), the pulley I am supplying is the 50Hz model which is coloured Nickel (part 58646)

This motor pulley is fixed to the motor shaft with two side grub screws (slot heads) so changing the pulley is not a difficult task.

Stamped into the metalwork at the "head" (where the motor shaft exits the motor) is

GARRARD MADE IN ENGLAND

One side has a White paper identification label which reads ...

200~250V 0.07A 100~130V 0.14A 8W 50-60Hz

DUAL OR HIGH RANGE GARRARD ENG.

The base plate is a stunningly shiny Chromed metal - nice!

Three metal posts are used for mounting posts, these mate with three rubber pads that also provide for acoustic isolation from the metal chassis. These rubber pads or boots are also supplied along with the original metal washers and circlips.

I have left the Green Earth wire intact

2) AC input terminal block

This is made from Brown bakelite (base) and a clear plastic top cover secured with a single bolt. Stamped into this cover is the instructions for wiring, depending upon the AC input (100~130 or 200~250) It is currently wired (strapped) for the higher voltage input.

3) Motor ON-OFF plunger arm switch

This is very much a Garrard customised switch. Looks to be all bakelite material, even the plunger arm. It is not a good idea to dig around inside these switches (from personal experience in the past) but I have taken off the top cover to show the disc ceramic spark suppression cap installed inside the switch)

ALL interconnect wiring remains intact and connected i.e I have not cut any wires

COSMETIC CONDITION:

USED

CLEAN

NO component is damaged at all - meaning the motor frame is in great condition, the terminal block is not cracked or broken and the same goes for the plunger switch.

On-Off switch plunger works smoothly, good return spring action and no sticking.

All very well Russ, but does it work?

Absolutely, like a dream. These motors are well known for their acoustic silence and this motor is no exception. Bearings are fine although I would suggest a drop of light oil wouldn't go astray in the top bearing. These do not require a lot of lubricating but it has been some years since I have had this turntable in constant use (about 5 years I think) Garrard provides lots of helpful lubrication information in their User Manuals for this turntable (and others).

The spark suppression works too, no dreadful loud CLUNK! through the loudspeakers when the motor runs up to speed.

I have now packed these components to ensure the condition is maintained and they now eagerly await another Garrard machine to be given the "motor of life!"
