HISTORY:

My wife "collects" but is changing which type of china/porcelain she wants (now pre-1900's) and she has come to realise that many of our special items need to "leave home" to find a new, caring home to live in.

Our philosophy is love and appreciation for the imagination and creative skills used when designing and making these pieces so many years ago. We are not into "let's make a quick buck" here as it does appear many others like to do ... take a look around online at greed in action with atmospheric asking prices which only pushes this wonderful chinaware further and further out of reach for the "Average" collector.

Our asking price for these Shelley pieces reflects our philosophy and in a bid to promote the addition of a trio to your collection, if all three pieces are purchased then an automatic discount will apply at the checkout.

DLAT RATING: 10/10 (Darling Look At This!)

Dainty, delicate, very pleasing shape and yes, yet more flowers but at least this time they are pretty little violets!

SHELLEY - Teacup, Saucer & Side Plate

Price indicated is for EACH PIECE, however if all three pieces are selected then an automatic discount does apply in the checkout (20% off each piece)

Circa 1940's

Bright White Fine Bone China

Pattern: VIOLETS

Pattern #: 3821

Hand decorated

Background colour is brilliant White

Design: As the pattern name suggests, these pieces are dominated by a pattern of collected Violets with foliage, one larger group of flowers, a small group and finally a single Violet on each piece.

Goid gilding is not used in this pattern, with the trimmings being decorated in a Mauve colour.

Shape: The teacup is a "standard" shape with a normal handle (not high back) but unlike many teasets, the top rim is not scalloped but instead has eight "dips" or notches in the top rim. The rim of all pieces is finished with the Mauve colouring.

It would have to be said that overall the design is very nice to look at but not overly ostentatious. This teaset will NOT scream at your guests "Look at me! Look at me!", it has subtlety and assumed "class"

Fine Bone China, meaning it is very light to hold and translucent (you can easily see the shadow of your fingers through the china when held up to a strong light source)

Circa period of 1938 ~ 1966 (based on the backstamp design) but we know for sure these pieces all date from the late 1940's as we were gifted a lot of old Shelley many moons ago which the original owner purchased in the late 1940's, just after the WWII - remember that "fancy tableware" production was largely halted during WWII by British Government decree (Wartime Concentration Scheme) so when the production of fancy tableware was allowed once again, this type of teaware was very popular in the late 1940's ~ early 1950's

BACKSTAMP DETAILS:

Makers mark printed on the base of the teacup (under the glaze)

Makers mark printed on the base of the saucer (under the glaze)

Makers mark printed on the base of the side plate (under the glaze)

Mauve & Red markings off to the side of the backstamp are two decorators marks

DIMENSIONS:

TEACUP: 88mm mouth x 67mm height

SAUCER: 145mm diameter

SIDE PLATE: 151mm diameter

CONDITION:

This first section of the condition report is universal to all three pieces, any difference or flaws are noted below this section

NO cracks

NO chips

NO crazing

NO fleabites on any piece, particularly the saucer & side plate

NO discolouration observed to the brilliant White base porcelain

NO damage or wear is apparent to the decorative artwork

NO damage to any of the rim or teacup handle (all over Mauve) decorative work

I cannot see any flaws or imperfections with any of the pieces that require a special mention - without a lie this is a truly very good example of Shelley tableware from the period.
