R H & S L Plant

Tuscan was the tradename used by the pottery, RH & SL Plant located at Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. The backstamp began to be used from 1947 onwards although my wife believes these items of Tuscan date from the 1950's ~ 1960's - many English works were adjusting their product range after the severe restrictions placed on them during "THE War" and the general design indicates a product produced a little later than just after the war. In 1966, Wedgwood gained control of the R H & S L Plant product, renaming the range to Royal Tuscan.

DLAT Rating: 8.5/10 (Darling, Look At This!)

I have called this an art deco design because of the creative artwork, the sharp defined lines and geometry of the flowers and foliage - unlike many other examples of chinaware featuring flowers (and aren't there a lot?) this saucer stands out because the artwork looks more like an artists sketch drawing. It has been very skilfully decorated by hand - confirmed by looking very closely at the decoration with a magnifying glass and also the artist's mark on the underside.

TUSCAN - Saucer (1) ONLY

Fine Bone China

Circa 1947+ (based on the backstamp design) most likely 1950's ~ 1960's though

Translucent fine china, meaning that when it is held up to a strong light source you can easily see the shadow of your hand through the chinaware

Scalloped rim

We are unaware of this pattern/design name, in many ways the flowers look "sort of familiar" and yet at the same time, "fantasy like". Noticeable is the strong, defined line work used for the branches and foliage.

SPECIAL NOTE: The artwork elements on this saucer slightly differ from that on the side plate. Two of the "drawings" are very similar but one group of flowers depicted on the side plate are not present on this saucer and instead have been replaced by flowers which look to be bottle-brush Red/Pink flowers.

Gold gilding has been hand applied (Gilder's mark on the underside) heavily all around the top edge only.

DIMENSIONS:

140mm diameter

Weight: 150g

CONDITION:

USED

CLEAN

Very Good condition

NO cracks

NO fleabites

NO crazing

NO discolouration - in fact the brilliant White base colouring is soooo White we were surprised and had to double check the age of this piece, it is however definitely from the time period indicated (it has hardly seen the light of day, sitting in the cupboards under our china cabinets)

Gold gilding is in good condition although not as pristine as the side plate. Looking closely at the gilding work, I can see just the slightest signs of handling wear - not terrible but you can see it when looking hard enough.

Now all we need to find now is the teacup, to complete a very nice trio! Still hunting through all of our chinaware that must find new homes

USED Exactly as described
