Khaki And Green (Plus)
Published By The Australian War Memorial
Printed by Halstead Press Pty Limited, Nickson Street Sydney
1943 First Edition
Hardcover
No dust jacket (if there ever was one)
Brown/Orange cloth - this book was released with variations in the cover colouring e.g two tone Khaki & Green, All Green - these are quite common but this brown/orange cover is not so easy to find
Also includes a mini-booklet that I have called Khaki And Green "Plus" because the book Khaki and Green has a "mini-booklet" of later publishing date tucked inside the book. It was published later than Khaki and Green, around 1950 and it deals exclusively with the Korean War and covers our military efforts from our Navy, Air Force and Army. This booklet is separately stapled and not part of Khaki And Green. All photographs are monochrome and cover such things as our warships (Bataan, Shoalhaven & Warranmunga) a map of Korea, before it became South/North, aircraft shipped via Japan for No. 77 Squadron RAAF (Mustangs)
It is important to note that the material in this mini-booklet was provided by the Armed Services Public Relations people, there are no stories or thoughts from the servicemen themselves
Cloth covered front/rear cover
Glued spine
Medium size @ 280mm x 220mm x 20mm thick
204 pages
Many illustrations, colour plates and mono photographs and drawings
The text has wholly been provided by serving Australian troops with a foreword by the Commander In Chief, General Blamey
This is not some documentary effort from a civvy street reporter but actual stories, poems, thoughts from the troops themselves - salvaged from scraps of paper or whatever the soldier could find to write on.
Very very interesting views and thoughts from the troops about war, home and their mates.
The colour plates are like paintings more than photographs but the mono pictures are old photographs or hand drawn sketches. Really interesting photographs showing such things as the Ninth Division march past before leaving Palestine, the railway station at El Alamein, the searchlight beam used in the Egyptian desert to signal the beginning of the Allied drive in Oct 1942, Tommy The Tank Man totally buried in the desert sand at El Alamein and so much more ...
BOOK CONDITION:
Outer cover is in good condition. The cloth like material is not torn or damaged, even on the spine. One curious mark in the top right corner, it is like a dot of wax has been applied. A couple of white marks/spots to the rear cover.
Pages are complete - none are missing
Pages are for the most part clean, some minor "tea stain" type marks on some pages but no mildew
The spine (inside) NEEDS REPAIR!
If you look closely at the photograph of the inside front page, you can see where the page has given way. All of the pages are still securely glued to the spine but this spine damage means the front cover moves around a bit.
I am not a book repair person but I guess with some skill and knowledge, this problem can be repaired.
An amazing slice of Australian military history
