HISTORY:
Our family is very much into "the Arts" in all it's forms, from music, works of art and including handcrafted items in a using a variety of materials such as porcelain, china, silver and even timber (when hand turned)
While we tended to purchase 'traditional' oil, water-colour based artworks but sometimes a beautiful handcrafted piece in other materials would catch our eye, this native timber container is one of those items.
Jam Wattle is a native tree of Western Australia, often referred to as Jam Wood and usually used to 'flavour' BBQ'd food due to the raspberry aroma the cut wood produces.
The heartwood of the Jam Wattle is a dark reddish brown with a light yellowish sapwood, clearly layered separately from the heartwood.
Here is a photograph of some cut Jam Wattle timber
We bought this in the 1980's but have no idea when it was crafted and even who made it!
Small wooden container
Skilled wood turned creation
Material: Jam Wood (Wattle)
Medium lustre resin coated (higher gloss than Satin but not a very high gloss such as a polyurethane might produce)
No lip
No decorations added
Unlidded - it is not missing, it was designed for use without one.
Inside is has the resin applied - I used this on my office desk to keep little bits and pieces at one time
Measurements: 67mm height x 60mm wide
Green felt pad on the base so it doesn't slide easily
White paper label on the base (faded but still readable) with the following text inside a red outline of Australia
Made In
W.A
JAM WOOD
COSMETIC CONDITION:
In a word, very good!
NO scratching to the wood, inside or externally
Beautiful grain of the timber is clearly visible
The three areas of lighter brown/sandstone colouring are NOT rub marks or faults but actually the softwood part of the original wood.
Nice little wooden object that beats the hell out of a plastic container on the desk!
