HISTORY:
Norfolk island was settled by the British very soon after their arrival in Sydney, 1788. It was considered desirable because of the Norfolk Island pines being particularly useful for ship building. Some 35 years later the island was used as a Penal colony, for the worst of the worst criminals of the day. It was known for the merciless discipline and punishment used against the prisoners who were unfortunate enough to be sent to the island.
The pottery is called COTTAGE POTTERY and they produce handmade pieces for the tourist market visiting Norfolk Island. This was purchased by one of our friends who visited the island and given as a gift to our family quite a while back. We have serious space issues these days and are 'culling' various pieces of pottery, chinaware and artworks in an attempt to make more space in which we can live!
Cottage Pottery was begun by Steve and Alison Ryves in the early 1960's, soon after their arrival on the island.
COTTAGE POTTERY - Medium sized pouring jug
Thrown on Norfolk Island using local clay.
Distinguishing feature of this clay is the high iron content which produces an interesting terracotta like effect
This pouring jug has also been produced using the 'drip glaze' effect with the deep browns 'dripping' down the sides from the top of the jug
Dimensions: 150mm height x 110mm diameter at the base
Strong, wide carry handle
Glazed both outside and inside, only the base underneath is unglazed
MARKINGS/BACKSTAMP:
Normally this COTTAGE POTTERY has a small metallic sticker on the side of the jug identifying the origins. That sticker unfortunately came off the jug quite some time ago but all is not lost! Underneath, stamped into the clay is
NORFOLK ISLAND
S R
I would believe the SR refers to Steve Ryves - the potter of course
