HISTORY:
While we love our English and Irish Chinaware, Porcelain & Belleek pieces, creative earthenware such as drip glazed items would also catch our eye.
We are ever so slowly working through many years of items we have collected and enjoyed but at our stage in the 'path of life', it is time that some of our items find new caring homes so that they can bring joy to others who appreciate such things.
This is yet another of our drip glazed pieces, reluctantly being 'let go' because it was rather special in that the colouring encompasses the whole range from very earthy rich Reds and Browns, through the Yellows and Greens then dominated by the Teal Blues, Sky Blues and Greens.
This piece does NOT have the potter who threw this identified, very much in the vein of a Remued or a Diana style but there is absolutely no identification or even 'number' on the underside - just the 3 bumps where it sat on the wheel.
We do know it is uniquely Australian as we originally obtained it from another who collected such things and while they also could not recall exactly who created this piece, they did originally purchase it directly from the potter back in the 1960's. We obtained this vase in the late 1970's from them.
UNIDENTIFIED POTTER - Medium sized vase
Circa 1960's
Ribbed sides
First glaze is a Teal Blue Green 'wash' over which the drip colouring & glaze has been applied. The colours used represent colouring across a wide range from the earth to the sky, the beauty of this vase is that by just rotating it slightly you can create a totally different appearance.
These drip glazed vases are unique, never the two are identical being individual creations
DIMENSIONS:
Stands 5 inches (127mm) tall
Mouth is 3.25 inches (80mm) diameter inside
Ribbed sides are 4.75 inches (120mm) diameter at the widest point (in the middle)
Base foot is 3.5 inches (92mm) diameter
Due to the geometry of the vase, it is very stable and cannot be easily knocked over!
COSMETIC CONDITION:
While it may be beautiful and interesting to look at, it's the condition of the piece that really matters!
USED
CLEAN (inside and out)
NO chips on the body, underside or the top lip
NO cracks at all
NO discolouration to the colouring
NO crazing (cracking of the glaze coating) - wet and dry tested
This piece is glazed both outside and inside, after all it is a vase and you wouldn't want it to be porous! The glaze is not cracked inside at all. In fact we have never used this for flowers, it has been such a lovely piece to just display and didn't feel the need to place flowers in it!
You may notice those small spots of discolouration right on top of the lip, that is colouring used by the potter and not mould!
This vase is a brilliant example of this glaze/colouring technique from the 'mystery potter'
