Drip glazed pottery was a distinctly Australian technique used by potters and is instantly recogniseable.
The colouring used was typically colours of the earth and sometimes, the sky - this vase has both.
We strongly suspect this is an example of "Diana ware" although the base does not have a backstamp or other markings, we believe this is because Diana produced very large numbers of pottery pieces in their day, generally for the consumer market. Before we started selling our own "drip glaze collection" we had a large collection of Diana ware's, some with signatures, some with just Style numbers and some with no marks at all.
FLOWER VASE
Drip glazed
Australian made (but not sure 100% by whom)
Circa 1950's ~ 1960's
Medium size: 160mm diameter (top) x 120mm height
Colouring: ranges from earthy browns, oranges through to greens and sky blues
Design: intended for short stem flowers with an outer circle of 8 holes, an inner circle also of 8 holes and a larger central hole
The two circle holes are all 10mm diameter and the much larger central hole is 30mm diameter
The location of the holes and number mean that the vase is extremely flexible in use - we found the multitude of holes to be very helpful when arranging.
High lustre glaze
COSMETIC CONDITION:
NO cracks (watertight!)
Light crazing (cracking in the glaze) can be seen here and there, it is not serious though
Five small "pin hole" type marks to the top which are from the original manufacturing, the glaze has infilled these little marks
NO broken pieces or damage from handling
The flowers are NOT included, just presented to give an idea of what this vase can look like! By the way, those flowers are plastic (Urgh!) but our flower garden was substantially damaged during the terrible wet weather of 2022 so we were not able to use "real flowers"
Excellent example of the well known Australian drip glaze worksmanship
