An interesting example of Japan pottery but obviously produced for the Western consumer.
It has some aspects of a Toby style pottery but the artwork looks to be European, fair skinned couple dancing with European style houses and mountains in the background.
We have looked all over the artwork, no hidden markings
That central jug is definitely for a cold liquid (way too large for a milk jug) and was never intended to have a lid.
A large central jug with six medium sized mugs - we believe it was intended as a refreshment set, not specifically for coffee or even a hot liquid but more likely for water or a punch/juices.
Central jug 19cm high x 13cm at the widest point
Mugs 10cm high x 7cm at the widest point
It just doesnt look like a tea set - the design is all wrong for that but if for coffee, who on earth would want such a large central jug with no lid?
Nice handpainted work, good quality glazing, clean finish and consistent design across all the elements of the set.
Something to visually enjoy and ponder!
No damage at all - a good example of this type of pottery from Japan.
