Beautiful condition, every piece has been carefully inspected for flaws/damage
We bought this set in the 1980's from an estate sale, no idea what the vintage of this tea set though - probably earliest would be late 70's and at the time of purchase these had no use at all.
We have had them in the display cabinets, never used them.
Japanese Porcelain
Typical Japanese design, LOTS of gold gilding with that mother of pearl sheen inside the cups
Bright white porcelain base clay
Truly great for a large gathering of the ladies, twelve complete teacups & saucers
These are the small tea cups, slightly larger than a demitasse cup.
Probably from the era when Japan was pushing into the European porcelain market especially considering the design is of a couple in "period" clothing - very English or European design
The backstamp is in the english language, no Japanese at all
The makers name is difficult to establish, there is what looks to be an H and a K in old script writing, very difficult to read.
For us, there is no doubt this porcelain was never intended or aimed at the local Japanese market.
We have very carefully inspected every single piece, although having been in the display cabinet for years accidents do happen, however we can find NO damage since manufacture to any piece
*** NOTE *** The qualification used in the no damage statement.
If you look at the backstamp photograph, you can clearly see a flaw in the base of that saucer.
That indent is from manufacture (it is under the glaze) and not happened since it was made.
Only ONE saucer (the one shown) has this flaw, all other saucers are perfect.
NO chips
NO cracks
NO discolouration
NO wear to any of the considerable gold gilding used, including the cup handles (often this is where handling wear will show up)
So, an attractive (although some might say gaudy) LARGE tea cup and saucer set - great for display or for that large afternoon tea meeting coming up...
