HISTORY:
We are cleaning out our "overgrown" collection of UK (mainly) chinaware because we have quality chinaware coming out of our ears! Some pieces/collections have been kept but others must find new homes to accommodate our latest passion - fine, artistic chinaware (hand painted of course)
If other Irish pottery, such as Belleek, is close to your heart, you might also like to take a look HERE
We found some of our beautiful Donegal china which is now destined for another home so we are offering this very delicate and attractive SMALL vase.
Never heard, seen or touched some lovely Donegal Parian China? The company was a "youngster" in the Irish fine china world, formed by previous highly skilled
workers at the Belleek works due to their unhappiness with the direction that Belleek was taking and the management at the time. Donegal Parian China began
operations in 1985 and eventually ceased operations around 2005 according to newspaper reports by The Irish Times.
Some of the Donegal workers had the opportunity to return to Belleek! Quite a turnaround when you think of it, those Belleek workers left to form their own company, producing fine porcelain for Donegal and then returned to Belleek eventually. It is very likely that some of the earlier (pre-1985) Belleek pieces were actually made by what were now the Donegal Parian China workers.
This china is very light, a fine porcelain made with a special clay mixture which comprises a high proportion of frit. Frit? what on earth is frit? Take a look HERE to find out more
If you hold a piece of Donegal Parian China or Belleek in your hand it is instantly recogniseable due to the weight and the appearance, often it has a creamy appearance.
Donegal Parian China focused on the giftware market and this small vase is an example of their products.
DLAT Rating: 10/10 (Darling Look At This!)
Yes, this item of Donegal Parian China rates right up there at 10/10 for appearance and 'feel"
DONEGAL PARIAN CHINA - Small Vase ONLY
1985 ~ 1990 (based on the period we visited Ireland and purchased this piece)
White/Cream porcelain base
HIGHLY Translucent! When held to the light you can easily see the shadow of your hand/fingers through the porcelain and in fact you can see the image of the
backstamp on the underside. It feels a little like you are holding an egg shell!
Weight: 95g (Extremely light)
Design: #7030 Rose
Most likely (but not sure) the design has been applied using a transfer technique. The artwork has a very "airbrush" appearance and when viewed extremely
closely (with a magnifying glass) I can see something like a "cheese cloth" pattern around the artwork. No raised areas of paint either. No indications (artist marks)
on the backstamp of a works artist being involved.
BACKSTAMP:
Printed under the glaze, in Black
(All of the below text and graphics are within a complete circle)
IRISH PARIAN
(large central area graphics)
DONEGAL CHINA
Original Green paper label identifying the design number and name partly obscures the backstamp
DIMENSIONS:
116mm height
50mm diameter scalloped top rim
64mm diameter base
82mm diameter body (at the widest point)
COSMETIC CONDITION:
NO cracks
NO chips or fleabites
NO crazing
NO wear showing to the artwork at all
NO discolouration (inside, externally & underneath)
Original paper label remains intact underneath, partially covering the backstamp AND the original metallic Silver label identifying the maker is intact on the side of the vase.
Truly a lovely piece from Donegal Parian China, as time goes on these will become very difficult to find.
