HISTORY:
We are cleaning out our "overgrown" collection of UK (mainly) chinaware because we have quality chinaware coming out of our ears! Some pieces/collections have been kept but others must find new homes to accommodate our latest passion - fine, artistic chinaware (hand painted of course)
We found some of our beautiful Belleek porcelain/china but alas, the cup was dropped! So now we are offering the trio as separate pieces (although not the cup of course)
If Irish pottery is close to your heart, you might also like to take a look HERE
Never heard, seen or touched some lovely Belleek? This is very light, fine porcelain/china made with a special clay mixture which comprises a high proportion of frit. Frit? what on earth is frit? Take a look HERE to find out more
Genuine Belleek wares are distinctly different to that (mostly) 'it all looks the same' English chinawares, hold it in your hand and it is so delicate and lightweight, the surface is often 'patterned' and the porcelain gives off a shell-like glow
Another great thing about Belleek ware is that it can be accurately dated, the company was very methodical when it came to their dating system so that you can easily see when that gorgeous piece of Belleek in your display cabinet was made.
Belleek wares are highly sought after, watch out for fake Belleek ware!
Belleek began operations in the mid 19th Century and the type of clay they use plus high quality craftsmanship (or craftswomanship) make for a very high demand for quality genuine Belleek.
DLAT Rating: 10/10 (Darling Look At This!)
Yes, this piece of Belleek rates right up there at 10/10 for appearance and 'feel"
Here is an example of a gorgeous Belleek teaset from the turn of last century, stunning! (and expensive, expect to pay upwards of A$1500 for such a set)
BELLEEK - Tea Saucer (1) ONLY
1955 ~ 1965 manufacture date based on the backstamp
White/Cream porcelain base
HIGHLY Translucent! When held to the light you can easily see the shadow of your hand/fingers through the porcelain and in fact you can see the image of the backstamp. This was one reason that Belleek changed the colour of their backstamp from the original Black to Green.
Extremely light: 50g
Design: Shamrock (three separate artworks) using only various shades of Green
HAND DECORATED
The saucer surface is not just smooth but has been "patterned" and the artwork has been applied to the raised surface of the porcelain.
You can also see the shape of the saucer is not a traditional 'round' type and this was called the 'shell shaped' range. Ever wondered what the teacup looks like? Ours is lost to the world but here is a photograph of a friend's teacup and saucer of the same type
The backstamp is definitely the 5th mark, using Green. Also interesting is that Belleek does not glaze the backstamp area, the underneath is of course glazed but the centre is left unglazed.
DIMENSIONS: 128mm diameter (across the two widest points)
COSMETIC CONDITION:
NO cracks
NO chips or fleabites
NO crazing
NO wear showing to the artwork at all
NO discolouration (inside & underneath)
