Begun by JH Weatherby in Hanley at the Pinnox Works, Tunstall 1882
In 1892 the potteries were moved to Hanley at the Falcon Works.
DLAT Rating 8/10 (DLAT means Darling Look At This!)
WEATHERBY & SONS Teacup ONLY
Hanley - Falcon Works pottery
Chinaware
1934 ~ Late 1940's
Opaque (you cannot see light through the sides)
White base colouring
Hand painted
Small, colourful spring flowers with foliage
Predominately the artwork is around the outside of the cup but there is also a small artwork inside the cup (near the top)
Gold gilding to the rim (two lines) and one side of the handle
Scalloped around the top rim area AND also the base, this is quite unusual but fortunately the cup remains stable!
A very "bright" and cheery cup in the traditional English vein of the period
Makers mark on the base is NON EXISTANT! Actually the word ENGLAND is imprinted into the clay but it is extremely faint. We only know this is Weatherby & Sons because we have other pieces of the same design which have clear makers marks (saucers etc).
COSMETIC CONDITION:
Very good condition overall
NO chips or fleabites
NO discolouration
NO crazing
NO cracks
Gold gilding is largely unworn with only very light wear on the top rim. A curious thing about the top rim, near the handle. At first we thought it was a chip out of the rim but it seems there is an intentional "dip" in the rim. When the cup is held with the right hand, the thumb sits in this very small rim depression.
