Founded in 1845 in the township of Longton, Staffordshire
Not the same potteries as the contemporary Royal Stafford, which was created in 1992 by the merger with Barratts Of Staffordshire. This creamer jug was produced well before the 1990's
Royal Stafford Bone China
Longton Staffordshire
Creamer Jug
Hand decorated. The lime green around the rim and the fine single rose buds around the middle of the cup all look to be hand-painted (slight differences between each rose)
Gold gilding applied just below the top rim, handle and base area.
74mm diameter x 90mm height
Pronounced pouring spout and elaborate handle
Although a very traditional pattern is used (roses), the lime green top rim is an interesting touch and gives the feel of something from around the 1950's ~ 1960's - it is actually very hard to find definitive backstamp dating information for the old Royal Stafford.
BACKSTAMP DETAILS (Brown/Orange coloured):
ROYAL STAFFORD
BONE (Crown Graphic) CHINA
MADE IN ENGLAND
There is a single lime green paint stroke below the backstamp which is the artist's mark, these were important to identify each item an artist produced as they were paid "per piece" not by the hour.
CONDITION:
NO cracks
NO chips
NO crazing noticed
NO damage to the artwork
NO wear apparent to the gold gilding
HOWEVER, the clay has become slightly porous in the base and inside the creamer appears "dirty" - this is NOT a tannin stain but more likely that the glaze has failed enough to allow liquids to penetrate into the clay setting up conditions for a fungal growth resulting in the discolouration. Other than normal cleaning we have not attempted to clean or remove this marking (someone suggested a bleach but we prefer to leave it alone!)
