Royal Doulton extensively was inspired and used designs relating to children's nursery rhymes. The Nursery Rhyme series was introduced in 1903 and used artwork based on paintings by the artist Savage Cooper and the series was the prerunner to the well known Bunnykins range.
It is said that the first Royal Doulton Nursery Rhymes earthenware were ordered by Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII for their grand-children.

Simple Simon met a Pieman going to the fair.
Says Simple Simon to the Pieman "let me taste your ware"
Says the Pieman to Simple Simon: "shew me first your penny"
Says Simple Simon to the Pieman: "Indeed I have not any."

A peck of pickled peppers, Peter Piper picked
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers

This printed backstamp was used from 1932 onwards and the D 5187 identifies the Nursery Rhyme series around 1937
The 12 also is an indication of the manufacture year, adding the standard 27 years to this and you end up with 1939 so I would prefer to say this bowl was created somewhere between 1932 ~ 1939
CONDITION:
Clean
NO cracks
NO chips
Light crazing to both the inside and outside of the bowl.
Some light wear is evident to the artwork due to previous use., there is also some light glaze "useage" marking to the inside base from previous use.
