In some "circles" Royal Albert was the ONLY bone china to have if you wanted to be part of a 'society' ladies group.
Old Royal Albert is elegant, classy and just the name will impress others.
Well known for their extremely popular Country Roses series, Royal Albert produced much more than Country Roses, this saucer from the Tea Rose series is another of their many designs and take particular note that this is of the Hampton shaped chinaware.
DLAT RATING: 9.5/10 (Darling! Look At This!)
ROYAL ALBERT - Cup ONLY
Circa 1940's
Size: Demi (small cup)
Shape: Hampton (narrow at the rim and the bowl extends outwards towards the base)
The Tea Rose pattern was produced in a number of styles, this Hampton shape is not so commonly found.
Being demitasse (smaller than a standard teacup) we always called this part of our Royal Albert collection the "Doll" section - very pretty tea or coffee cup but take just a sip and it's all gone!
Fine Bone China
Translucent, meaning that if held to the light you can easily see the shadow of your fingers through the china
Hand painted and gold gilded
Design: Tea Rose (Registered pattern 839056)
Yellow rose bud surrounded by foliage and other rose buds some of which are as yet unopened and others partially open. The design extends inside the teacup, which must have been a real challenge for the artist.
The gold gilding is applied to the outer rim with a "splatter" finish, not solid line work. Gilding also applied in two solid rings near and at the base of the cup. The handle is elaborately decorated with gold gilding on the top, both sides and the back facing section.
CUP DIMENSIONS:
Outer rim: 71mm diameter (this is much smaller than a "standard teacup")
Arched handle (but not as distinctive as the Countess style)
Height: 70mm
Weight: 100g
BACKSTAMP DETAILS:
The cup has this backstamp text
(Pink)
ROYAL ALBERT (Arched text following a curve)
(Crown graphic)
BONE CHINA (to each side of the graphic)
ENGLAND
(Lime Green)
"Tea Rose"
RGD No. 839056
Both the artist and gilder's marks are clearly visible below and also to the right of the backstamp
CONDITION:
USED
NO cracks
NO chips
NO signs of glazing breakdown (Dry and Wet)
NO discolouration
NO wear can be observed to the fine hand crafted artwork, outside and inside the bowl
Amazingly skilled artist that can accurately apply the rose decoration INSIDE and deep within the cup. I can see a couple of "slip of the hand" (Green dabs that shouldn't be there) but the decoration remains very skilfully applied.
NO unsightly tannin stains or discolouration inside the cup
Gold gilding is practically unworn, although in "some lighting conditions" I 'think' I can see a very, very slight spot wear to the top rim Gold gilding decoration. Just ever so slight and certainly not "thread bare"!
The cup shows little (if any) signs of use....
