HISTORY:
Portland began operations in the mid 1940's, immediately after the end of World War II. They were earthernware manufacturers, particularly of pieces intended for the table.
By the early 1950's they had become part of the Ridgway potteries and finally in 1956 the company Portland was 'wound up' although the name Portland Potteries continued to be used for a short period after this.
PORTLAND POTTERIES - Saucer ONLY
Portland's factory was located in The Regal Works, Cobridge, Stoke-On-Trent Staffordshire UK)
Circa mid 1950's
Cream/White base china
Design: Three sets of Yellow & Pink roses, which look similar to Primroses, with foliage
Hand painted
From the rim to the centre of the saucer is a 'stepped' effect to the china, it is not a simple downwards curve. Additionally, the rim has a 'stiple like' edge which is finished with Gold gilding
The saucer is opaque, meaning that if held to the light you cannot see the shadow of your hand through the saucer.
DIMENSIONS:
146mm (5.75 inches) diameter
BACKSTAMP:
Printed in Silver Grey
(Crown graphic)
PORTLAND POTTERY
Cobridge
Staffordshire
MADE IN ENGLAND
12/1955
Artist and Gilder's marks are clearly visible
The last line is interesting and somewhat unusual, we have always assumed it is a date and is not even coded. We have always taken this to mean the piece left the kiln in December 1955 and the design plus hand decorating also support this time period.
COSMETIC CONDITION:
CLEAN
Barely any signs of useage at all
NO cracks
NO crazing
NO artwork damage
NO discolouration to the base colouring (Cream/White)
NO wear observed to the Gold gilding
One fleabite on the underside, near the rim.
Very nice example from Portland, as a replacement saucer or match it with that teacup you have but could never find a saucer (this Portland china is not easy to find)
