Poole Pottery began way back in 1873, founded by Jesse Carter with their market being primarily floor and wall tiles. The business continued to grow, although with some difficulties during the WWII period, and continues to this day - all Poole Pottery is made and decorated in England.
POOLE POTTERIES - 'Cucumber Dish'
Ceramic (not Stoneware)
Pattern: C54
The design is very minimalist (compared to most other Poole items) - a clean, medium brown colouring on the top and cream underneath.
Actually the proper terms for the colours are Mushroom & Sepia
The top part of the dish is ribbed, making it look more like a large 'pod' than a cucumber, but the latter is what everyone called them back in the 1950's
322mm length x 103mm wide x 23mm height
At one end of the dish is a finger grip.
During the 1950's Poole Potteries produced a wide range of colours for these cucumber dishes, I know some people make up 'sets' of these.
BACKSTAMP DETAILS:
The distinctive 'Dolphin' backstamp was in use 1955 ~ 1959 period although I wonder if this dish was made just a little earlier because just after WWII, the British Government did not allow the use of decorations on pottery intended for the home market until after 1952. Poole Pottery items normally have extensive hand decorations, they are quite distinctive but this dish has no design work at all.
All print is in Pale Blue

ENGLAND
C54
COSMETIC CONDITION:
CLEAN
NO cracks
NO crazing
NO discolouration - the brown topside and cream underneath has even colouring throughout.
End finger grip is not worn at all
I did notice a very small mark on the inside/base of the dish. It is NOT a chip and you cannot see the ceramic base material underneath the brown colouring - it is like a small 'dent' in the ceramic if that makes sense. It is TINY but I thought I should mention it.
