Classy, classic  J&G Meakin chinaware

DLAT Rating: 9/10 (Darling, Look At This!)

J & G MEAKIN Side/Cake Plate ONLY

We cannot put a specific year of manufacture for this side or cake plate but estimate it to be between 1912 (when the SOL trademark was first registered) until the late 1930's

These pieces were part of an extended family estate and we worked out that they are most likely to have purchased these in the mid to late 1930's

Cream background colouring

Pink central rose surrounded by a wide lime green band with a band of gold gilding to the edge.

Hand painted - NOT transferware

Extensively decorated with a band of patterned gold gilding and then around the edge.

Backstamp reads:

(SOL graphic)

J&G MEAKIN

ENGLAND

Artist ID marks on the base of the side/cake plate, these were used to identify who contributed to the production of each piece from the factory - the workers were paid on a "per piece completed" basis, not by the hour! These artist marks positively show that this chinaware was hand-decorated.

CONDITION:

I have two of these side/cake plates available and the description of each is below.

Overall, these are both extremely good examples of a J & G Meakin side or cake plate from the 1930's - very good condition.

A:

NO cracks

NO fleabites

NO chips

Artwork is clean and undamaged

Lime Green band shows just a very faint "discolouration" - hard to describe, you can see a very slight inconsistency in the overall lime green colouring

Gold gilding has only the very lightest of wear - very nice condition.

B:

NO cracks

NO fleabites

NO chips

Artwork is clean and undamaged

Lime Green band shows just slightly increased amount of this "discolouration" mentioned with A: - hard to describe, you can see a very slight inconsistency in the overall lime green colouring PLUS there is one small black/green dot. Looking at it very closely, it seems to be an imperfection before it was fired, something like a speck of dirt under the glaze.

Gold gilding has only the very lightest of wear - very nice condition.

If purchasing only one side plate, please indicate whether you desire A or B
