Beautiful Alfred Meakin dinner plate which is being offered in "below average" condition - why?
This was part of a very old dinner set, with the very "rolled" edges design and the coloured backstamp - it is just a very nice plate which although the condition is "below par" we couldn't bear to use as a "garden pot" base (that's where a lot of our lower grade chinaware ends up!)
DLAT RATING (Darling, look at this!) 6/10
ALFRED MEAKIN DINNER PLATE (9")
1945 ~ (based on the backstamp used)
Opaque chinaware (you cannot see through the clay)
Cream base colouring overall
Rose Marie design which is a single Pink open rosebud with foliage and a Yellow closed rosebud, again with foliage.
All artwork decoration appears to be hand painted
Gold gilding to the outer rim only
The backstamp (Green flowing writing) is:
(Crown graphic)
ALFRED MEAKIN
ENGLAND
(Coloured graphic showing a much smaller version of the design)
ROSE MARIE (Pink colouring)
Artist ID marks on the base of the plate, these were used to identify who contributed to the production of each piece from the factory - the workers were paid on a "per piece completed" basis, not by the hour!
COSMETIC CONDITION:
NO cracks
NO significant discolouration or spotting
NO visible crazing (although wet test does show some crazing)
Very light useage damage to the decoration (some leaves in particular)
Medium wear is evident to the gold gilding from handling. None has been completely worn away but the signs of handling are obvious
