Very traditional 1930's period design (in contrast to Art Deco which was also being produced around this time)
This design is for the "conversatives" nice subdued artwork with a look of "class"
DLAT RATING (Darling, look at this!) 9/10
ALFRED MEAKIN TEACUP
1930's ~ 1940's
Opaque chinaware (you cannot see through the cup walls)
Cream base colouring overall
Pink rose like flowers (with foliage in green, grey and yellow) on both sides of the cup, one artwork being the dominant and the other (on the other side) much smaller.
All artwork decoration is hand painted (very skilled work)
Gold gilding to the top lip and handle - this gilding is heavily applied and "feathered" at the edges. We are separating the complete dinner set and when these are stacked in the cupboard, the gold gilding jumps out at you - stunning tableware!
The impressed backstamp is very simple but barely readable
ENGLAND
We know this teacup is an Alfred Meakin only because it was part of our dinner set! Teacups are often like this, having very minimalist backstamps in many cases.
Artist & potter's marks on the base of the teacup, these were used to identify who contributed to the production of each piece from the factory - the workers were paid on a "per piece completed" basis, not by the hour!
COSMETIC CONDITION:
As I have multiple teacups, each has been carefully checked and the description below applies to ALL teacups on offer
NO damage to the artwork
NO cracks
NO fleabites or chips
A couple of VERY LIGHT "spots" - one on the ribbed side of the cup and inside the cup at the base (probably tannin stains (tea) from previous use years ago)
