Very traditional 1930's period design (in contrast to Art Deco which was also being produced around this time)
This design is for the "conversatives" nice subdued artwork on a cream coloured base, a touch of "class"
DLAT RATING (Darling, look at this!) 9/10
ALFRED MEAKIN SOUP TUREEN
1930's ~ 1940's
Dimensions: 19cm (7.5") diameter x 7.5cm (3") deep bowl
Easy lift handles on either side of the tureen
Opaque chinaware (you cannot see through the clay)
Cream base colouring overall
Pink rose like flowers (with foliage in green, grey and yellow) in three areas of the lid and four on the bowl sides.
All artwork decoration is hand painted (very skilled work)
Gold gilding to the lid top handle, outer rim of both the lid and the bowl with the gold gilding being "feathered" and solidly applied.
This soup tureen was part of our stunning tableware set, which if still available, can be found on this website (cups, saucers, plates, bowls) - the gold gilding especially stands out when the dinner service is stacked in the cupboard!
The backstamp (Green flowing writing) is:
Alfred Meakin
England
Artist ID marks on the base of the bowl AND the lid, these were used to identify who contributed to the production of each piece from the factory - the workers were paid on a "per piece completed" basis, not by the hour!
COSMETIC CONDITION:
LID:
NO damage to the artwork
NO cracks
NO discolouration or significant spotting
NO crazing
TUREEN BOWL:
NO damage to the artwork
NO cracks
NO discolouration or significant spotting
NO crazing
Gold gilding is excellent on both the lid and the bowl.
Overall, this is a stunning example of a classic soup tureen from Alfred Meakin potteries and I guess through a lack of use, in excellent condition considering it is touching on 90 years old.
