Very traditional 1930's period design (in contrast to Art Deco which was also being produced around this time)
This design is for the "conversatives" nice subdued artwork with a look of "class"
DLAT RATING (Darling, look at this!) 9/10
ALFRED MEAKIN SAUCER
1930's ~ 1940's
Opaque chinaware (you cannot see through the clay)
Cream base colouring overall
Pink rose like flowers (with foliage in green, grey and yellow) in three areas of the saucer, one artwork being the dominant and the other two much smaller.
All artwork decoration is hand painted (very skilled work)
Gold gilding to the outer rim - this gilding is heavily applied and "feathered" at the edges. We are separating the complete dinner set and when these are stacked in the cupboard, the edge gold gilding jumps out at you - stunning tableware!
The backstamp (Green flowing writing) is:
Alfred Meakin
England
Artist ID marks on the base of the saucer, these were used to identify who contributed to the production of each piece from the factory - the workers were paid on a "per piece completed" basis, not by the hour!
COSMETIC CONDITION:
As I have multiple side or cake plates, each has been carefully checked and the description below applies to ALL side plates on offer
NO damage to the artwork
NO cracks
NO discolouration or significant spotting ** I do notice a tiny "dot" here or there and one plate has a "splash" of gold where it should not be (Woops, a slip of the artist's hand) but these are certainly NOT significant at all.
ALL plates exhibit low level crazing. This was obvious with a "wet test" - if you wet with water a piece of china and look at the finish after a few minutes, if there is crazing (cracked glazing) it will become very obvious. All of these plates have low level crazing, once dried it is difficult to see but it is there none-the-less.
SOME side plates do have at least one underside glaze imperfection. These are best described as little "bubbles" of glaze, not fleabites or chips.
Gold gilding is excellent on all cake/side plates with very little (if any) wear to the gilding on all plates.
