Very 'plain' tableware design from Alfred Meakin, simple but olde world elegant. Not one of those pieces of tableware that screams out "Look at me! Look at me!"
Nice example of the Honey glazing used by some potteries in this period
ALFRED MEAKIN - 9" Plate
Circa 1930's +
Opaque chinaware (you cannot see through the cup walls)
Honey glaze which creates a 'Cream looking' base colouring
Plain all over colouring, no hand painted artwork
Hand applied feathered Gold gilding to the outer scalloped rim
Backstamp clearly identifies this plate as being in production during the 1930 - 1940's period.
Backstamp is a Dark Green colour and using 'flowing writing"

Gilder's mark on the base of the plate, these were used to identify who contributed to the production of each piece from the factory - the workers were paid on a "per piece completed" basis, not by the hour!
COSMETIC CONDITION:
USED
CLEAN
NO discolouration patches to the Golden Cream colouring
NO cracks
NO chips
NO observable crazing, dry or wet testing.
A couple of LIGHT knife marks in the top central area, none are of any substantial significance.
Two fleabites on the underside and three small 'marks' which appear to be imperfections in the glazing as they feel like bumps in the glaze.
On the underside I can also see a small 'bubble' of the Honey coloured glaze used.
Gold gilding to the edge is in very good condition will very little signs of wear BUT I can see a couple of spots where the gilder 'missed the mark' and placed Gold in the wrong spot! That's handcrafting for you ...
