Graythwaite - Historic homestead Sydney
Artist: Rose Lee
Oil painting on canvas
1978
Graythwaite is of course the very historic building in Sydney (adjacent to Shore School) which was built in the 1850's
It has had a varied history, is National Estate listed and although Shore wanted to buy the property, they were unsuccessful many years ago. In NSW Government care at the moment but there are moves to sell the property in the future.
We strongly suggest looking at the Graythwaite website for full information about this wonderful piece of our heritage.
A note about the painting itself. Although painted in 1978, the painting depicts the house in much earlier times - see the gravestone and old cart in the foreground.
Also the photographs on the website show 4 chimneys, this painting appears to show only 3. The windows on one side are painted as 3 up and 3 down on one side but in the photographs, this side has only 2 up and 2 down - artistic licence?
SIGNED by the artist, although I cannot find out much about Lee
Measures 200mm x 150mm, no border on the actual painting
The painting is NOT behind glass
The rear tape needs replacement, it has disintegrated with age
The frame is sound and wood but it is nothing fancy
Painting is in excellent condition with no damage
A lovely painting, nice colouring and of Australian historical value.
