ARTWORK HISTORY & PERSONAL RAMBLINGS:

Another of our Australian oil paintings that has been with us for quite some time, purchased many years ago (since the late 1970's in fact)

This is one of many paintings that we affectionately called "space fillers"!

We love art, actually NZ & Australian landscapes to be more precise and most of our paintings are "medium" sized with some very large paintings but then we ended up with areas of "white space" on the walls - Oh dear, what to do?

The "light bulb" came on and it struck us that we could decorate those empty white areas of wall with much smaller paintings, like little windows into another world!

That was fine and worked well for us until we moved from a very large house to one much smaller - now we have a number of these smaller paintings with nowhere suitable to hang them!

This small painting is one of those "space fillers"

We don't have much information about the artist but we suspect this is a non-professional artist's work, not because it is badly created but due to the fact we could never find out much about the artist (we originally bought this painting, along with another HERE, from a little antique shop way out bush!)

For us, it's about the art not the artist so this lack of information didn't worry us at all.

UNTITLED - Australian Rural Church

K. TRINDER

Oil on board

Circa 1970's

Subject: Church in an Australian rural setting

Looks can be deceiving and at first glance we thought this was a homestead but a few things don't "add up". Sure there is the verandah which is common with rural homesteads albiet pretty small BUT we then noticed that the roof pitch is very steep, there are no chimneys and the front windows are long vertical standing rectangular style, typical of a church not a homestead. While the absence of at least one chimney may not mean it is not a homestead, it was common to instal at least one fireplace in a home. We feel this building was not lived in but "attended" from time to time. Lastly the construction materials look to be a sandstone/lime plaster build, again not so common in a homestead where local timbers were much more common.

Whether we are "off the mark" or not, it wasn't the homestead that grabbed us anyway, love that "sunburnt country" look surrounding the house.

The scene depicted by the artist is simple but gives you a little view "through the square window" into an early Australian rural scene - somewhere!

As to where that scene is located, we have no idea at all - unfortunately the artist did not write anything on the rear of the painting to indicate the location they painted.

FRAME: 220mm wide x 205mm high

ARTWORK: 122mm wide x 108mm high

Told you it was small!

Light discolouration to the border fabric but not covered in fly spots!

Gold painted frame is undamaged and looks great!

Resealed the rear of the frame because after 50 years, the old paper tape had begun to fall apart - a nice and sealed now

Wire hanging cord is fitted to the rear (not nylon)

Now that we will not be keeping this artwork and I have finished the description, it has been placed in a sealed cellowrap packet to ensure it does not collect dust and dirt - it will be sent to the new owner in this way.
