ARTWORK HISTORY:
Our family is very much into "the Arts" in all it's forms, from music to art to chinaware and even classic old (quality) technology!
Our focus has always been landscapes, both Australian and New Zealand as we have connections with both countries but over the years our walls have become overcrowded with artworks and although we love just about every painting we have, it's time to hang some new acquisitions and sadly this NZ oil painted by the Australian artist John Emmett must now leave home!
You can see the other artwork in this area from Allan Waite HERE
JOHN EMMETT:
John Emmett was English born (1927), migrating to Australia in 1948 and living in the Blue Mountains NSW.
Painting was his past time, working in the electronics and broadcasting industry (M.D Sherwood Radio and following this, announcer and station manager at radio 2KA at Katoomba.
He painted prolifically and with considerable skill, capturing landscapes of the Blue Mountains NSW and also while travelling he painted scenes in New Zealand, Fiji, England, Scotland and Wales.
SUBJECT OF THE PAINTING:
Landscape scene set near Queenstown, New Zealand. The Kawarau Gorge has steep, very rugged rock outcrops with the Kawarau River flowing at the base.
Beautiful area to visit but you need to be very tough to live there! It gets extremely cold in Winter (I remember seeing black ice hanging from the trees years ago and in summer it can be stifling hot! Even though this area can be quite hostile for people, it was a very busy area during the Otago Gold Rush back in the period 1861 ~ 1864.
This oil painting is of the Kawarau River, near "Roaring Meg"
Painted in 1973 when the two hydro electric power stations (built in 1934) were still being used.
