South Africa courted apartheid under the National Party, a white South African government during the period 1948 - 1994
Black South Africans were discriminated against, considered more as animals than humans by the white government (and settlers)
Sun City refers to an entertainment precinct in South Africa, where well known overseas performers could be enticed with BIG $$$ to perform for the white folks (to give the impression to the white locals and the outside world that all is well in South Africa, "nothing to see here")
Those who did not agree with apartheid refused to play at Sun City but there were some artists who saw the colour of money as being more important and they did still perform for the white folks (Frank Sinatra/Queen being a couple of them)
Rolling Stone magazine hailed this "Sun City" project as “one of the most fervent and forceful political statements to emerge from Eighties pop music”
The idea of these artists/performers getting together (Artists United Against Apartheid) was to bring the South African apartheid regime to the world's attention and try to persuade other artists that performing is not always about money! - get some cred and stay true to your beliefs.
This is an apartheid protest/activist recording by a collection of artists taking a political stand on South Africa's apartheid regime and they include:
