THIS AUDIO RECORDING IS A BOOTLEG, UNOFFICIAL AND OFFERED ONLY FOR THOSE WHO WOULD LOVE TO EXPERIENCE THE MUSIC OF MARY LOU LORD AND HEAR HER PERFORMING LIVE
This tape was sourced a long time ago from a music industry acquaintance who actually made the recording of Mary Lou performing live in San Francisco
I am BIG on sustainability and just hate the idea of a cassette, let alone significant music, go to waste and be buried in the earth - Urghhh!
I am not selling this music per se with the price being asked representing a token amount for the time I spent creating this advertisement and for the raw material, the physical cassette tape.
Who is Mary Lou Lord?
She is an accomplished indie folk rock artist who began being noticed as a Boston area subway busker, a tough gig! Since those days she has made numerous live performances, often in close intimate venues, and I believe she performs to this day. Media has taken a salacious interest in Mary Lou because of her friendships with Elliot Smith and Kurt Cobain, she sings one of Nirvana's songs on this recording.
This tape ....
A long time ago, in a far away galaxy, an acquaintance went to one of Mary Lou's live performances. With a portable recorder nearby, they made the recording on Side B of this tape. This is was at The Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco on 6th March, 1995. Even to this day, "Bottom" is the heart of live music in San Francisco.
Elliot Smith was her SUPPORT artist, opening for her that night but he is not included on this recording. Mary Lou plays, chats to the audience and sounds somewhat unfamiliar with the live gig scene when she explains to her audience that she is more used to the busking environment where there is only her, with no supporting sound engineer. It's all very cosy and the music is great.
Recording quality of both the "Real" dub and the Live recording is 'average' quality, not startling but very listenable.
MARY LOU LORD - Real (1993 album) plus Live performance at The Bottom Of The Hill, San Francisco 1995
BOOTLEG - NOT AN OFFICIAL PRODUCT!!
Provided for those who wish to know Mary Lou's music and hopefully then seek out legitimate copies, although you may need deep pockets because I see that online the selling prices for the album Real (Dm11 Dream Music which was released only on cassette in 1993) sell in the region of $150 ~ $200 per copy!
Cat# Not Applicable
Dubbed (Real) and recorded live in USA
1995
Clear cassette packaging is in good condition, some scuff marks to the clear front section but no cracking. All tracks off Real are listed PLUS her unedited song Camden Town Rain (with the double intro, take 1 & take 2) and the live recording is marked on the labelling as simply "March 6th 1995 San Francisco - this is her "Bottom" performance
Recording tape used is TDK AD90, low noise and normal bias used.
Inspected the front pressure pad and side rollers, they are all fine. This is a screw type clamshell so if something ever went awry with the tape inside e.g in need of relube or other maintenance, then you can get inside but beware! as you can easily end up with a room full of tape if you are not careful.
Test machine, my Nakamichi 480
Before playing, I have repacked the tape (complete FF & RW cycles a couple of times), and then played both sides ENTIRELY - there are no issues with the shell or tape at all, audio is full range with no "drop outs" or high frequency loss across both sides.
This is a really good playback, the dub of the album is satisfactory and the live recording is also good. No excessive audience chit-chat/noises with Mary Lou and her guitar being nice and clear (for an acoustic recording at least)
SIDE A
REAL (Dub) with Camden Town Rain included at the end of the tape - the unpolished version with a double take at the intro
TRACKS: Andalucia, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Thirteen, Not Necessarily The Bubonic Plague, St. Swithens Day, Eternal Circle, Memories Of You, Can You Fool, Please Be With Me, Only Business, Walkin On Air, That's The Way, London Bridges
Camden Town Rain
SIDE B
LIVE PERFORMANCE @ THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL, 6TH MARCH 1995
Mary Lou introduces herself, chats a little with the audience and plays a number of songs including Camden Town Rain. After 25 minutes she "takes a break" and a male performer entertains the audience for 12 minutes, I think she said he is Jimmy Bruno
Mary Lou returns and continues her song performances for a further 11 minutes and then the recording ABRUPTLY stops - no more audio.
The following video was shot in earlier years but gives an idea of Mary Lou, her music and her live performance
