Oh Dear! This item has been sold but take a look around for other similar items

DISPLAY & HISTORICAL PURPOSES ONLY

Due to the nature of this porcelain jug's design, I would NOT suggest everyday use - I am not sure about this but I suspect this type of jug with an open heating element would not meet current Australian Electrical Safety Standards

Look at it, reminisce but do not use it!

Unfortunately this is not a lovely old Nilsen Kookaburra electric jug but it is a very good example of an early(ish) Australian electric jug

This type of electric jug was quite unique to Australia, earliest models were released by Nilsen in the 1930's but this is a much later model from the 1970's through to the early 1980's

I can distinctly remember these being in common use, even up to the early 1980's.

I would strongly recommend this jug be for display purposes only - for safety sake.

The body is vitrified porcelain, the top lid is plastic.

Vitrified porcelain is glass like in appearance and is designed to have extremely low water absorption - extremely important in a product such as this!

The power cord plugs into the top lid area and when the plug is inserted, it is then impossible to open the lid - you cannot "feel" how hot the water is unless the cord is completely removed, with good reason!

So what is the "good reason"

The wire element is an open frame, the water inside the jug is "live" while the power is applied.

I have included a photograph of the element, so you can see what they look like.

There is no auto shutoff, once boiling point is reached, the jug will just keep on bubbling and throwing out steam until it is turned off.

Everest Electric Jug

Model: SEH J14/15 (A little difficult to read)

Lemon coloured vitrified porcelain

Body was "probably" made by Fowler under the branding Fowlerware, this is a smaller version electric jug and of very similar design to the 2L model I also have available - the 2L body is made by Fowler.

1 litre water capacity

Measurements: 180mm H x 180mm W x 140mm D

Weighs 1.1Kg

Quick boiling

1650W 240V open wire element sits in the water

All metal work (male power connection posts, element arms, nuts) is brass

CONDITION:

In extremely good, clean condition

No damage (particularly no cracks or defects to the porcelain - if so, then such a jug should be thrown out as it can be very dangerous)

Black plastic top lid is secure and still shiny

The heating element has seen use but it is still in sound condition but no idea how much life may be left in it.

TESTING:

This electric jug will be supplied with the heating element installed.

NO power cord will be supplied with the jug although I do have just one power cord advertised separately.

It is NOT RECOMMENDED to use this jug for everyday hot water needs - use a modern appliance instead and keep this jug to remind you of the "old days"

and will be supplied as a complete, working electric jug.

With some trepidation I tested the jug, the thought of an open element with 240V AC flowing through it sitting in open water is just a bit scary!

First I checked for any leakage of water, there is none at all.

I am NOT supplying the cord with the jug but I DO have the cord advertised separately (Burton electric jug cord).

No bangs, no sparks at all - the jug just quietly starting heating the water (you can hear a very low level sizzling) and within a couple of minutes I had a jug full of boiling water.

It works fine, a very nice example of an old domestic appliance.
