HISTORY:
My "world" is 'the arts' and more specifically, music, artwork and hand crafted/decorated chinaware's.
I am not a film enthusiast but an associate has asked me to find new owners for THEIR large collection of photographic and film items ... this is one of those items.
While the world of 8mm/Super 8mm is not my area of expertise, I am doing my best to establish the condition of each item that I am listing.
I tend to be quite detailed in my item descriptions, please READ all the details to decide if this item may interest you.
Now, on with the description ...
COLUMBIA HOME MOVIES - Super 8 Film
Commercial release for the Home Movie market
JOLSON SINGS AGAIN (1949)
Catalogue # MM5007
This is home movie (selected scenes) is all about Al Jolson, America's greatest, most well known and highly paid stars of the 1920's - yes, 100 years ago! He was a singer and actor. Collectors of Al Jolson memorabilia are becoming a bit 'thin on the ground' and also considering the condition (see the testing description below), this film has been priced accordingly.
Leader film is fitted
7" 400 feet Fire engine Red PLiO MAGIC (USA) reel
Additional bonus! A card that the film owner could return to Columbia to receive a free catalogue and hints on how to setup your Hollywood home movie theatre! Obviously included just for nostalgic reasons
Colour
Sound
Packaged in a pivot hinge style all plastic case, front being clear and the rear a pale Blue. Simple cardboard sleeve is used for the labelling. Additionally, the owner has stuck a label on one side of the case indicating it is about Al Jolson
COSMETIC CONDITION:
USED
CLEAN
Film stock and the reel is completely undamaged, plain White leader fitted
The plastic case does have a few handling scuff marks/scratches but there are NO cracks or pieces missing!
Extremely low level "vinegar" smell from the film, hmmm I am told this is not a great thing to smell in a film but let's see how it goes .... see test results below
NO personal names or other writing on the case or the film reel
TESTING:
Tested with the ELMO ST 1200 I have available, and away we go ....
I have around 5 minutes off the reel for testing
Leader film is fitted
Colour film and this does show "Red shift" but I must say that the Red is not completely dominant as I have seen worse in the other films I have tested. I can still see some Yellows, Greens etc but not a lot of Blue.
Sound is not so great in my honest opinion. While there are no "drop outs", the high end has dropped off somewhat so Al sounds just a bit muffled - like singing with a towel in his mouth! Not good as you can imagine!
I am very fastidious and careful with these Super 8 films and I have now packed the film package within sealed, clear plastic while it awaits a new owner
