ELIJAH COTTON LTD - Side Plate (1) ONLY
Made in England
Also marked as Nelson Ware, this was the name of their works in Hanley
Mid 1950's based on the printed backstamp and type of decoration used
Hand painted and extensively Gold gilded
DESIGN: A period scene of a lady in a full formal dress (Lavender & Yellow) sitting in the garden with a teapot and tea accessories on a small table next to her. In the background is a thatched roof cottage.
Funny thing here ... this very same graphic was also used by Adderley Floral on a small pin dish that I have also advertised HERE
The painted artwork is overwhelmed by the prolific Gold gilded artwork, I cannot see any particular order to this Gold gilding, just a large collection of leaf-like shapes. Gold gilding has also been applied to the outer rim of the plate.
Shape: Square with rounded, scalloped corners
DIMENSIONS:
145mm x 145mm
BACKSTAMP DETAILS:
Simple Black printed stamping, here is a photograph of the backstamp used ... note the reference to both NELSON WARE (not Lord Nelson as was often used) and Elijah Cotton Ltd
COSMETIC CONDITION:
I have two of these side plates, offered separately. The first section of this report relates to BOTH side plates and then any additional notes specific to either plate follows the general section
USED
CLEAN
NO cracks
NO chips
NO discolouration to the artwork
NO significant wear to the Gold gilded design or edge trim although having been hand applied, it is not all nice and even such as a machine would create!
A few light knife cuts to the cental area of either plate but nothing significant (they have been used after all)
SPECIFIC TO A PLATE
One plate has one fleabite and four small discolouration "spots" on the underside (only)
The other plate has two fleabites and again a couple of these small discolouration "spots" on the underside only.
