The KRAUTKRÄMMER USIP-12, though old, is an extremely high performance test instrument and very few other instruments are comparable. Many scientific and precision non-destructive test papers have been based on using the USIP-12 for measurements.
Ultrasonic Non Destructive Testing (NDT) uses ultrasonic vibrations of high-frequency, transmitted from a small probe and received by the same or another probe.
These ultrasonic vibrations can travel large distances in fine-grain metal, in the form of a divergent wave with progressive attenuation.
This ultrasonic technique can detect internal, hidden discontinuities that may be deep below the surface.
Transducers and coupling wedges are available to generate waves of several types, including longitudinal, shear and surface waves.
Applications range from thickness measurements of thin steel plate to internal testing of large turbine rotors, flaws in ceramics and mineral based materials.
Most non-porous, resilient materials used for structural purposes (steel, aluminium, titanium, magnesium and ceramics) can be penetrated.
Ultrasonic testing techniques are widely accepted for quality control and materials testing in many industries, including electric power generation, production of steel, aluminium and titanium, in the fabrication of airframes, jet engine manufacture, and ship building.
EQUIPMENT HISTORY:
This equipment was purchased along with a large amount of other test equipment from a private scientific testing facility in Asia.
It has been declared as fully functional prior to disposal, the reason for which was liquidation of the company.
KRAUTKRÄMMER Ultrasonic Precision Transmitter/Receiver
Model: USIP-12
Made in Germany
1980's
AC 240V 50Hz operation (current setting)
AC 100 - 120V operation is also possible
REAR PANEL PORTS/CONTROLS:
RF Echo (BNC)
Rectif Echo (BNC)
DB50 female port - connections unknown
CRT control adjustments:
CRT Focus
CRT Intensity
CRT Vertical Shift
AC Power input (IEC male socket)
FRONT PANEL:
CRT Display 95mm x 105mm (green phosphor)
Power On LED (Green)
Power On Switch (push on push off)
The rest of the front panel is occupied by system modules, or space for a module.
These modules are:
Empty slot directly below the CRT - this is for the Wall Thickness Monitor type DTM-12
Unless the user is undertaking tests requiring this module, the unit will function fine without it.
HI RESOLUTION PULSER / RECEIVER MODULE
The heart of the USIP-12. This module sends precisely controlled ultrasonic signals to the TX transducer and receives ultrasonic signals from a separate transducer.
Controls:
Gain dB which can be precisely controlled up to 60dB
Frequency which can be precisely set between 0.5 & 25Mhz
TX Low or High power
Dual or Single pulses
TX Damping
RX Filtering
RX Rejection
TX & RX probe ports (female) - these are LEMO's so the selected probes will need to either be terminated with a LEMO male plug or use commonly available LEMO to BNC adaptor.
(View the photograph for a complete picture of the module)
TIME BASE MODULE
Repetition Rate ranging from External, Auto to 8K
Range coarse and fine controls from 5mm to 5m
Material setting (precise multiturn pot calibrated in Km/s)
Delay Settings
(View the photograph for a complete picture of the module)
GATE MODULE
DECR Coarse & Fine controls
Alarm indicator with audio on/off switch
I.F Echo noise immunity control
(View the photograph for a complete picture of the module)
DAC MODULE
Delay coarse & fine adjustments
Near & Far Slope adjustments
Far shape adjustments

We are offering the USIP-12 with only the modules described above and the IEC power lead.
The casing is complete, the last photograph shows the top cover removed - we like to look inside the equipment to examine the engineering design. Of course this equipment is supplied with the top cover on!
We do NOT have a user manual
We are NOT supplying the probes - the user would need to decide which type of probe best suits their testing and the choices are very wide. It is not necessary to use probes supplied by Krautkrammer.
COSMETIC CONDITION:
Very good condition overall
Clean casing
Clean front panel with no missing controls/knobs
All labelling is clean and easily visible
CRT display face is clean
Minor scratching to the case but this in no way affects operation
TESTING:
Although from an engineering background, there are good reasons why I cannot fully test this equipment - I do not have any probes!
Testing therefore is limited to the basic operation of the equipment.
Power on - all good and no "funny smells"
I did notice the Power On button sometimes will not lock into position ON, a couple of retries sorted this out.
CRT display comes up quickly and the trace is bright and sharp
I focused on making changes to the Time Base module to ensure these were reflected in the CRT display, all good.
Without a set of probes I have been unable to confirm the TX and RX operation
