These are a small handheld unit that are designed to allow the user to quickly, easily and accurately locate a cable pair and then confirm the correct pair has been located.

This unit is designed to be used IN CONJUNCTION with the Oscillator 87J advertised separately - the oscillator generates the tones and this receiver listens from them and by listening to the loudness of the tone (closer you get to the pair being sought, the louder it becomes) - you then confirm the correct pair by shorting it, the tone should then stop.

But wait! this unit is actually far more flexible than that. I had a play around with it and you can use it to also easily locate power wiring and I even could "monitor" a telephone line to a certain extent - no direct connection, you just hold the probe close to the phone line - you can monitor the touch tones being sent but not actually hear the much lower level speech.
This isn't the intended or design function of the probe but its fun to walk around and see what is emitting large amounts of EMF radiation at low frequencies.

Runs off a miniature 9V battery

By double pressing the ON-OFF button, you can change the sensitivity - intial turn on the sensitivity is at maximum and each push of the button lowers the sensitivity in a cyclical manner.

Tested and working great.

Some light scratching (these are outdoor tools afterall) but due to the high impact thermoplastic used, no substantial case damage - certainly no cracks or broken parts.

The "head" of the probe can be unscrewed (you can get other heads although this head is your general purpose one)
