Oh Dear! This item has been sold but take a look around for other similar items

SUSTAINABILITY:

To many this item might just be a used 4Kg lump of metal but I am big on reusing or repurposing old electronic components and hardware, particularly from the point of view of sustainability, it needs to be repurposed.

Sustainability is far more than NOT burying waste material back into the earth but consciously recognising the energy expended to create the item through it's various "stages" in life, beginning with the raw materials being extracted from the earth, processed, finished and then fitted into equipment - every single step used energy which is referred to as embodied energy.

Coming up with an Ee value for EVERYTHING us humans create is an attempt to take into account the energy used for extracting and processing of the raw materials, manufacturing of the component, distribution of the component(s) and final assembly of the component. In fact the measurement of Ee can become extremely complicated and technical, many tertiary institutions are involved in this specialised field of science.

The sole purpose of establishing Ee values is to raise awareness of the extraordinary energy consumed in the creation of various items - it may give you cause to think twice before wasting all that energy and burying it in the ground, with the possible side-effects of poisoning the environment due to leeching.

HERE is a page I have created which gives some tables and more detailed information about specific Ee values for different materials plus a link which you can use as a starting point to investigate Ee for yourself.

The creation of formed Aluminium from the earth raw materials is extremely energy intensive, add to this all the energy used to form the raw Aluminium, ship it from the smelter to the distributors and perhaps onward to the retails means that a LOT of energy has been used to create this lump of metal, then guess what?

The "clever" humans bury it in the ground once it's purpose is finished with - not as smart as we think we are!

HISTORY:

One of my special laboratory power test instruments has been on the "operating table", being "parted out" as the case had become damaged - electronically it was working fine.

This instrument could easily control power up to 1500W and any heat generated by the 40 (yes, 40!) output MOSFET's was dissipated by a pair of these heatsinks. Just to help things along, the heatsink also had a forced air cooling system which "cut in" when things became a little too warm.

The heatsink assembly comprises TWO parts, each part or side is identical. These were mounted vertically and orientated so that the fins of each heatsink are almost touching each other, forming a channel for the forced air flow. The outside of the heatsink had two rows of MOSFET's, each row containing 10 devices.

In the original equipment, these two sections of the whole heatsink assembly were securely attached to each other but fully ISOLATED from each other, meaning that each side of the heatsink assembly is insulated from the other AND also from the chassis mounting feet. This is achieved using thick clear perspex top and bottom strips and special metal insulated bolts for the mounting rails/feet.

The nifty set of two foot rails makes mounting of the heatsink assembly a "snap"

I am offering the two halves of the heatsink separately, in the interests of providing the most flexibility - for example if someone wanted to use this in a nice high output audio power amplifier, probably two heatsinks would be an overkill.

I will supply ALL of the bolts for semiconductor mounting as the holes drilled into the Aluminium have a thread.

UNIDENTIFIED MANUFACTURER - Large Heatsink Sub-Assembly (One section of two)

Original equipment was of Japanese manufacture

Heavy Duty

Designed for vertical mounting

High heat dissipation cabability

Predrilled to accept 20x flat pack MOSFET's (2SJ200/2SK1529 pairs) which are SC-65 packages (16mm x 20mm single hole mount)

Orientation of the transistors was designed so that the leads directly connect to a central "interconnect rail" - see the photograph

Raw Aluminium - not coated or painted

DIMENSIONS:

Overall block: 220mm x 110mm x 60mm

Fins: 8

Fin thickness: 5mm

Base thickness: 15mm

WEIGHT:

1.8Kg (each section)

COSMETIC CONDITION:

USED

CLEAN

Always "lived" in the lab test gear so there is no oxidising of the Aluminium, bright shiny.

NO damage of any kind (it would require a real knock to damage those 5mm thick fins!)

If purchasing one section, a pack of the 20x bolts is supplied

If purchasing the complete heatsink assembly (in which case an automatic discount applies), the entire hardware set is supplied i.e additional bolts, insulated bolts, perspex strips (2) and mounting foot/rail

While this assembly certainly will help keep your output transistors cool, in some situations it might be desirable to add some forced air. I have some VERY GOOD fans from Germany HERE

USED Exactly as described
