I am not a materials expert but I have very strong suspicions that the cushion material used in this clamp is compressed Asbestos! I have tried to research online about this material used by ADEL (USA) but it seems these are too old to have made it to the net.
The material looks fiberous, greyish in colour and sort of "multi-layered" or "flakey" - I do not mean the material is falling apart, IT IS NOT CRUMBLING, but the texture is not solid and to the touch it feels like it has some sort of binding incorporated.
I haven't come across Asbestos very much in past but when I saw these, it was the first thought that came to my mind ...
Let's assume this cushion material is Asbestos.
This means NEVER cut it or file the material, you do not want to create dust. Asbestos dust is very nasty stuff once it gets into the lungs, be extremely wary of this material.
HISTORY:
ADEL (USA) was (and perhaps still is) a major US manufacturer of specialist clamp products. These clamps are for high temperature use and most often found in the avionics industry.
This is a box of ten clamps (although I will sell them one by one, in sealed packs) dating from the 1980's and were to fulfill a Defence contract. The outer box is marked as DLA50087C0328, the DLA stands for Defense Logistics Agency in USA. I think I obtained these in the early 1990's from an Australian Defence "surplus to requirements" sale. I think it was a "job lot" because I normally wouldn't go out buying clamps, I think these came with other much more interesting items.
These are in great shape, like new in fact, and remain useful in harsh temperature environments or purely as "museum pieces"

These identification part numbers are stamped into the stainless steel clamp
5x clamps have one number and the remaining clamps, the other. The 299C436P4 clamps are also stamped ADEL
Materials: Stainless Steel sprung metal & the cushion looks suspiciously like Asbestos
