HISTORY:

Removed from a YAMAHA Tuner, type T-420A

SPECIAL NOTE:

Make sure you actually need this module! A common symptom is that the display is totally 'dead' however in reality it is working fine BUT the backlight (incandescent lilliput lamp inside a special hood arrangement) has failed.

NO backlight = NO display visible

This is a gotcha moment for newbies, be careful with this - NAD gear also commonly had this problem.

It is best to try and stay with an incandescent backlight so that the light inside the rear hood is nice and evenly spread across the back of the LCD but some people do experiment with LED's - albiet often with mixed results (because often only part of the display is backlit properly with a LED)

Best thing is that owners often throw their nice audio gear onto the street because it's "dead" but in fact they just cannot see the display. With this tuner in particular, it is VITAL to have that display functioning as it is the only visual interface to the outside world!

The usefulness of this module is envisaged to be in circumstances where the glass has been smashed or severely scratched on the unit being serviced.

COSMETIC CONDITION:

USED

CLEAN

Unscratched (or cracked!) LCD unit

PCB and external connector is also undamaged

TESTING:

While the tuner was still in 'one piece' I used various LED based light sources to provide the backlight (not an easy thing to do as the backlight should really be wide angle not narrow) but I managed to confirm all elements of the LCD are functioning fine. No dark spots or areas which didn't change from opaque to transparent. When a segment is activated, the liquid goes clear so you see a White character from the front. I also ran the segments through quick changes (station searching) and no lagging was observed.

Unfortunately I would have liked to include a photograph of the display (in action) but my camera only saw all the bright White light from the leds I was using for a backlight and the resulting photographs were pretty useless - you just have to take my word for it that the module is working fine!

I have now packed this module in ESD solid foam and then within ESD packaging, ready to bring life to another T-420A Tuner
