HISTORY:
Sustainability is the name of the game! Anything (that has been tested and still functioning properly) should be repurposed creating saving in wasted Ee and reducing the poisoning our environment when items are buried in the earth at the local tip needlessly.
Never heard of Ee? It is a concept that creates a measurement of ALL things (not just electronics) that humans have made and the energy used in obtaining the raw material, processing the materials right through to a finished product and even should include the shipping of the item to the distributors/retailers.
If you would like to know more about Ee values, please take a look HERE
Saved from landfill! While parting out an old piece of domestic audio equipment, this nice oval Magnavox loudspeaker came to light. Having been buried in the equipment, protected from the outside world, it is in great shape - look at that nice shiny basket!
MAGNAVOX were manufacturing here in Australia from the 1950's onwards and their products could be found in many locally produced radios, stereograms and television sets of the day.
Stock standard in other respects i.e oval design, 8 Ohm impedance and although I do not know the exact model number (label on the magnet is now unreadable except for MAGNAVOX), paper cone and with twin solder tag terminals.
This speaker was sitting behind a nice Black coated extruded aluminium grille and a piece of original cloth and secured with two heavy duty Aluminium side clamps - again, in the interests of sustainability, ALL of this hardware is included with the loudspeaker.
MAGNAVOX (Australia) Elliptical Loudspeaker
Unknown model/series as most of the rear label (on the magnet) has become unreadable
Four rib open basket
Paper cone
5" x 3"
Cork mounting surround
Solder terminals (twin style)
Nominal impedance 8 Ohms
Power handling is unknown, I cannot find any spec sheets for this speaker release but I would be guessing around 5W RMS maximum.
All hardware showing in the second photograph is included
DIMENSIONS:
Loudspeaker: 127 x 78 x 35
Magnet diameter 30mm
Black coated aluminium extruded grille: 138 x 75mm x 1mm thick
Cloth material (synthetic?) is the same size as the metal grille
External frame dimensions: 158mm x 106mm x 60mm deep
Mounting holes are 94mm apart (top/bottom) and 116mm (side/side)
CONDITION:
In very good condition, clean body
Clean cone
NO holes/tears
Cork is not crumbling and securely in place
Movement of the cone is smooth and without "scratching" (this would indicate voice-coil misalignment)
TESTING:
You couldn't expect any thing special from this type of loudspeaker and I was not disappointed. Pretty ordinary response but it does work!
DC resistance check made, reading around 6.4 Ohm which suggests that the design impedance is 8 Ohm
To maintain the speaker it has now been placed on a stiff cardboard backing (face down onto the cloth and metal grille) and sealed in plastic - this is how it will be supplied.
