HISTORY:
I ran an audio post production facility for many years and we liked to evaluate all types of speaker systems, from the mundane to the high quality professional studio monitor systems.
These SONY loudspeakers were originally part of a "higher priced" midi system Sony released years ago and we didn't expect too much from these speaker but for small spaces and keeping in mind the limitations of such small speaker systems (low end can be lacking), they present themselves pretty well.
Actually not really surprising (and one reason we bought these originally) because SONY have been in the professional video and audio industry for many, many years and even today SONY equipment is widely used in the broadcast and audio industry. So this nice compact two channel speaker system was from a time when SONY was chasing the consumer marketplace, sure it is made to a price but still good "bang for your buck" in the second hand market.
These bookshelf speakers come in very handy when space is at a premium, such as an apartment or small room.
Sound quality is surprisingly good, particularly the low end and high end response (see my comments below under TESTING)

TESTING:
Good speakers for all types of music particularly jazz, rock and female vocals. I was pleasantly surprised at the bass response, you really cannot expect much from such tiny driver/woofers but they perform very well and the rear porting is a big help here too.
The tweeters do a good job with the high end, highly responsive and in fact I turned down my Treble response on the NAD amplifier because (to me) the high's sounded a bit "peaky"
Overall, with various types of music these speakers do a great job and don't mind being pushed a bit hard either (I ran up to 45W RMS into these while testing and the audio didn't exhibit nasty breakup).
If you look around at online discussion groups you can see others who have had the same experience with these speakers, not too bad at all (particularly for the price range)
Not such a great video/audio clip but here is a video of someone else's SS-CSD1 running
Great for 2 channel stereo systems or as Front speakers in a multi-channel audio system
