MAGNAT HISTORY:
Magnat, never heard of them?
Formed in 1974, West Germany, the key to Magnat's audio worldwide success is innovation. Since their inception they have developed and created breakthrough's in loudspeaker technology. From the earliest ribbon wire speakers, plasma drivers, soft metal cone tweeters, Magnasphere omni-directional speakers right through to contemporary audiophile loudspeakers such as the Signature 909's (which are around A$5000 from Europe plus shipping)
So this company is at the forefront of loudspeaker technology, but at the same time they have their "bread and butter" products and these Home Theatre speakers (3) fit into this category. The quality is good and most suitable for "normal" home theatre use on a budget. These are NOT audiophile loudspeakers but then they are far more affordable too!
The Australian loudspeaker designer/manufacturer Richter had the same sort of product range, producing some audibly stunning loudspeaker systems and then they also had their "budget" releases, for the "how much money is in my pocket?" conscious buyer who is looking for a good sound but limited spending power.
Magnat Surround Sound Loudspeakers (3)
Made in Germany
All speakers are clearly identified on the rear of the cabinet, with a serial number (same number on each speaker cabinet #136361)
Centre & 2x front (or rear)
Black Ash veneer finish
Black, clothe front grilles
Each speaker is rated at 100W 4 Ohm impedance
Frequency response: 50 ~ 22KHz
Actual Loudspeaker used (Front Rear & Centre):
12cm diameter
Wide range
Model: TTP120-60F1-CNH 4 Ohm
The two front/rear speakers have one of these speakers in each enclosure
The centre cabinet has two of these plus what appears to be a tweeter in the centre. These are fully sealed cabinets and it was difficult enough to open up one of the smaller units without doing any damage (there is none) but I don't want to do the same thing with the centre cabinet. I can see a cutout in the centre but I do not know what speaker type Magnat has used for the tweeter.
NO internal acoustic baffling
NO rear porting, fully sealed
COSMETIC CONDITION:
NO damage to any of the cases
NO scratching or other marks
NO damage to the front cloth grilles
Each front/rear speaker has a 7mm hole cut into the rear for mounting (no hardware so you will need to adapt this to your situation if wall mounting for example)
The centre speaker does not have a hole in the rear.
All speakers use spring loaded terminals for easy connect-disconnect
DIMENSIONS:
Front/Rear speaker 150mm Wide x 140mm Depth x 170mm High
Weight: 1.2Kg EACH
Centre speaker 360mm Wide x 130mm Deep x 150mm High
Weight: 3Kg
TESTING:
I don't have a true surround sound system here so I tested each speaker as pairs using my NAD system. Absolutely no issues, no strange cone noises and the audio is really good.
Keep in mind though that these are small cones, and the frequency response is only good down to around 50Hz so to get all those bangs/crash percussive effects in your home theatre, you MUST use a decent sub-woofer system. Magnat has these as one of their products but I no longer have it here (sold already)
