Oh Dear! This item has been sold but take a look around for other similar items

HISTORY:

This sub woofer (25Hz is about the lowest you can go) was NOT used in a car! We ran an audio post production facility and wanted to make some tests at high power, very low frequencies and decided to play around with this HERTZ HX300.

We hit it hard (wanted to check the effects of very low frequencies on the human anatomy! You know, go to a decent VERY LOUD concert (something like Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force) and after a short time you feel sick to the stomach, not because of the music but because of all the low frequency vibrations are churning you up inside, that is what we were investigating.

Although in the car audio market these are quite expensive loudspeakers, for us it certainly beat getting some nice JBL 15 inch sub-woofers which cost a LOT more than these HERTZ

We didn't run 'standard' rap, rock whatever through these, they were hit hard with instrumentals with loads of thumping bass lines and percussion, LOTS of kick especially.

This sub-woofer performed exactly as expected (no issues), even with the 'defect' mentioned below...read about this in the COSMETIC CONDITION section of this advertisement

As the loudspeaker had done its job and our experimentation was complete ...it was then of no further use and this sub-woofer has been sitting (properly stored)  in the 'backroom' of our previous premises and then upon my semi-retirement from 'the game' in my storage unit until I had the time to find a new owner for it.

DESCRIPTION:

HERTZ - Low Frequency Loudspeaker (1)

Designed & made by Elettromedia ITALY

Model: HX300

Basic specifications

  • Size - 300mm(12")
  • Peak Power - 1200W
  • Continuous Power - 600W
  • Impedance - 4 Ohms
  • Frequency Response - 27Hz ~ 700Hz
  • Sensititvity - 90dB
  • Voice Coil - 65mm
  • Main Cone Color: Black
  • Woofer Composition: Polypropylene with Mica injection
  • Woofer Surround: Butyl Rubber

Don't be fooled by manufacturers splashing around the highest power rating figures, yes this woofer will handle 1200W without trouble but on PEAKS, the more realistic number is the CONTINOUS POWER RATING, 600 Watts - you can run this all day and the loudspeaker won't even break a sweat!

The same goes for the amplifier powering the woofer, this fiddling with the power ratings trick is used there too - it's the AVERAGE CONTINOUS POWER that is critical in the specifications, not the PEAK. If you have gear with a suitable average power rating, the peaks will take care of themselves (there is a direct relationship between the average RMS power and the PEAK power.

These subs are very well built so pushing them hard is not an issue. The bass is excellent and fast response to sudden percussive 'bursts' is awesome, clear and audible pounding that sounds and feels REAL (Oh yes Mama, this baby will make the earth move for you!)

Here is an audio/video link I found online - the main thing you should notice is the extensive 'throw' of the cone - I think judging low frequency response in different boxes is pretty much a waste of time when you are listening via the internet but I love the way the video shows the cone bouncing up and down (and especially that very nice flowing motion around 01:20) and this cone movement has relevance to my cosmetic condition report below...

Now that lovely cone bouncing in and out looks very cool but you will ONLY achieve the best results by using a well designed bass box for this beast!

We had a carpenter build a completely sealed cabinet, designed by our sound engineer for just that purpose - to provide great low frequency sound, enhancing the sound to as low as possible a frequency.

Damn it was heavy, VERY HEAVY. You need to make sure that the box you are building or having built for this sub-woofer is VERY STRONG (it shakes like crazy inside because there is a LOT of air being pushed around), is completely sealed and the timber used is solid and thick.

As the box we had made was custom for our studio environment, we have now disposed of it elsewhere but the sub-woofer is now looking for a new home.

Take a look online, there is tons of information about suitable sealed enclosures for this sub-woofer.

COSMETIC CONDITION:

The basket of the loudspeaker is fine, like new

The cone is also fine, like new

The rubber surround has TWO slight 'issues' (well not really issues, more cosmetic than anything)

When our trusty carpenter was placing the sub-woofer inside the cabinet and tightening up all the wood screws, apparently his portable driver slipped a couple of times - DOH!

We only discovered this AFTER opening up the bass box and taking out the sub-woofer, he kept it very quiet! Now I will say we had NO IDEA, the sound was not affected in any way but still .... a professional slip of the hand just shouldn't happen

But on the other hand, the manufacturer put those mounting holes so very close to the rubber surround - not a smart move. Be VERY CAREFUL when securing this HX300 into the enclosure.

So what's the damage?

First up, in one of the photographs there is a couple of finger marks on the cone itself - they are just that, my finger touched the cone and left an oily mark but the cone is not damaged in any way.

The rubber surround is NOT pierced, no cut or hole but you can see the surface of the rubber has been 'rubbed" leaving a mark and on one mark the surface has been 'roughed up' but not cut through.

Now if you were going to be fanatical, you can get replacement rubber surrounds and have it fitted or do it yourself (if you are skilled enough) but in my opinion, if it works fine (which it does) leave it alone! As the song says "Don't Mess With Mister In Between"

Terminal area is fine, nice and secure voice coil wires and termination points for your heavy duty speaker cable (hex screws secure the wire into the terminal block)

Just one thing I really don't like about this speaker, the rubber surround protrudes quite a bit from the basket. This means the surround and cone are at higher risk of damage if not placed down correctly - in fact we never placed these face down, always upwards with special stiff custom made cardboard covering the cone for protection (shaped like an elongated U).

For all the grunt and muscle of this 12 inch speaker, at heart it is really a delicate little baby - treat her with care!

As I have now finished the photographs and description, I want to make sure this sub-woofer is kept safe and have now packed and sealed in a nice strong cardboard carton, ready to ship. The speaker is positioned 'face down' but with a custom made plastic suspension to ensure the rubber surround is not 'squashed' inside the box - this took quite some time to organise and I am not about to open the sealed box for someone just to 'look at it'

If you do not trust my description, your choice and best you buy elsewhere - I know it is in very good condition and hopefully off to a new owner soon!
