HISTORY:
Our business was centred around audio post production (what happens AFTER the raw recordings) and loudspeakers were one part of that world which we were always keen to learn more about and experiment with. Now that I have retired, a "truck load" of various loudspeakers and systems have already found new homes but there is more to come, along with components. Not much point in keeping this book any longer either, so it is seeking a new "home", someone with "a passion for loudspeakers, audio" and loves to try things out.
THE LOUDSPEAKER DESIGN COOKBOOK
Fifth Edition (1997)
Second print run (1997)
Softcover
Author: Vance Dickason
Publishers: Audio Amateur Press (USA)
Vance has been consulting to many loudspeaker manufacturers (Engineering Design) and is the editor of Voice Coil magazine, extremely well versed in the world of loudspeaker design - he knows what he is talking about and this book makes a very good reference for those who would like to create their own sound for either home or motor vehicle use.
It doesn't just "brush over" subjects but goes into the fine details
I also have always loved just looking at the advertisements in the rear pages, such lovely componentry from the likes of Morel, Audiotek and a wide range of loudspeaker audio related components.
A4 size pages
165 pages of interesting material and these are followed by many more pages of advertisements, Vance refers to these are your "Resource Guide" (All American or Canadian of course)
So, what subjects does the author discuss in his book?
Broadly, the following subjects are covered (in fine detail)
How Loudspeakers Work
Closed Box Low Frequency Systems
Vented Box Low Frequency Systems
Passive Radiator Low Frequency Systems
Transmission Line Low Frequency Systems
Cabinet Construction: Shape And Damping
Mid & High Frequency Drivers: Application And Enclosures
Passive & Active Crossover Networks
Loudspeaker Testing
CAD Software For Loudspeaker Systems - a lot of the information is now not relevant, the world of IT has moved on since 1997! but it may be that "updated software" could be found from the software programmers.
Home Theatre Loudspeakers
Car Audio Loudspeakers
Overall, the books remains very relevant (audio systems do not age, the basics remain the same over time with differences in production techniques, new material technologies driving any changes)
Quite technical, be prepared for some maths and understanding graphs!
COSMETIC CONDITION:
CLEAN
Light wear showing from use but nothing dramatic
NO pages are missing
NO stains or personal writing
Spine is sound and the pages are secured tightly (glue spine)
Paper stock is bright white and with barely any signs of "foxing" - that's where you get little brown spots or overall page discolouration (yellow to browns) due to the paper reacting with oxygen in the atmosphere) - These pages remain in very nice condition.
NO photographs to speak of (except the "Reference Section" at the rear (advertisements) but plenty of diagrams, drawings and graphs! This is not your pretty little "coffee table" book full of pictures but lacking information - this book gets to the 'meat' of loudspeaker and cabinet design.
Since this book is now looking for a new owner, I have now sealed it in cellowrap to protect from dust and the general environment - it will be supplied the same way
