As removed from my Radio Shack Nova-6 speaker system
Cabinet was a mess so I have "parted out" the speaker system
The Nova-6 bookshelf speaker system used Japanese manufactured loudspeakers, marketed by Radio Shack USA (Tandy)
Included is an extract from the Radio Shack USA catalogue, 1977
Pretty expensive when consider the prices indicated are now 40 years old.
Radio Shack marketed many innovative products sourced from Japan, rebadged from reputable manufacturers of the time. These loudspeakers are generally considered "acceptable" and not too bad but I am unaware of the original OEM for these.
Interestingly (to me), they also released some electrostatic loudspeakers but I have never had a chance to listen to these.
2" Tweeter Loudspeaker
Impedance: 8 Ohm
Apparently good to 20Khz (Radio Shack marketing blurb states this although without specs or suitable test equipment, I cannot confirm this)
Stamped on the rear:
TWEETER 8 Ohm
0735
JAPAN
52. 427A
Radio Shack used a 40-xxxx catalogue numbering system for their loudspeakers but these tweeters were not offered as a catalogue item.
Supplied with the original rear enclosure which is stuffed with acoustic absorption material.
Both are working, with that typical thin reedy tweeter sound (my ears at not good at the high end)
I couldn't find any specifications regarding sensitivity etc
Large 2" diameter x .5" height rear magnet
Not sure of the power rating for these, Radio Shack "paired" the NOVA-6 speaker system with their STA-64 Receiver which had a power output capability of 25W RMS per channel.
PHYSICAL CONDITION:
No damage at all, cone/surround all intact with no tears/holes etc
Voice coil moves smoothly without "scrapping"
Frame is undamaged
This 2 inch tweeter sits within a much larger 4.25" flange, the outer rim of the tweeter cone is supported by an extremely fine/thin mesh. I have carefully examined this mesh on both speakers, there is no damage at all.
So the physical diameter of each tweeter unit is 4.25" x 2" depth (then add another 2.5" for the rear enclosure)
It may be noticed that in the photograph of the rear, looking down at the magnet, there is a white ring around the outer flange. This is a foam gasket that was used when fitting into the Nova-6 cabinet and as it has been glued, no attempt has been made to remove it.
TESTING:
Immediately prior to dismantling I fired up the speaker system one last time and gave these tweeters a real working, removing all low frequencies and just hitting them with the highs - these tweeters are working fine.
I would imagine these are not audiophile but they have always given me a good listenable sound and would be great for some "general purpose" custom loudspeaker system
Both of these tweeters have been stored "cone down", with the rear enclosure on stiff cardboard and then sealed within plastic to prevent dirt/dust getting into the very fine mesh. This is how they will be shipped, if being shipped.
