HISTORY:
Working through yet more reel to reel related accessories and media plus some PHILIPS reel to reel tape machines, models N4504 & N4512
These knobs suit either model
Not a bad machine from Philips, 3 motors, separate Read and Write heads in addition to the Erase head, 3 run speeds but not all that impressed with the extensive use of plastic for the case, albeit high impact very strong plastic! This makes for a pretty lightweight machine compared to the Otari 5050's and Studer B67's I have lugged around in the past!
There was actually very little "wrong" with the machines I am "parting out" but I felt they were more useful as "organ donors" to bring other machines back to life (or improve their functioning) so they are currently being "operated on" to extract useful components.
I am very much "into" sustainability and a complete tape machine represents a LOT of embedded energy and to waste that embedded energy is a very bad thing, even worse is to bury it in landfill and subsequently poison our environment!
What is embedded energy?
Embedded energy is a measurement of the total energy that was used to create a component, a module or a complete piece of equipment originally.

PHILIPS - Reel To Reel Tape Recorder SPARE PART
Model: N4504 OR N4512
Part # 4H41310122
Control Knob (RECORDING LEVEL & BALANCE, PLAYBACK VOLUME & BALANCE)
Material: Plastic & a metal shaft sleeve
Type: Friction, D shape shaft - push onto the shaft or carefully/evenly pull off the shaft - no grub screws
Specially constructed knob that is used on the four front panel controls, this knob "mates" with the front panel fascia and it is very unlikely the knob could be used with other equipment.
Black plastic with a metallic silver band around the front section of the knob and a metallic silver pointer lower down. It has a standard D style shaft for fitting onto the pot shaft and this D shaped shaft has a metallic ring to prevent the plastic cracking. On the underside of the knob is a small, short "lug" which limits rotational travel when fitted onto the pot shaft.
DIMENSIONS:
31.4mm Diameter x 39.75mm total Length (includes the shaft)
The D is designed to fit a smaller shaft, measuring 4mm NOT a standard 1/4" shaft
COSMETIC CONDITION:
USED
CLEAN
NO broken parts
NO marks or scratching
Very light wear to the metallic Silver ring on the top of the knob but I must emphasis, this wear is only on some of the knobs and is very light.
Shaft is secure and shows no sign of stress, cracking etc
I have now packed these knobs individually in clear plastic packets, awaiting a new owner
