These are high quality, very reliable PLUGGABLE terminal blocks, hard wire entry (up to 16AWG) on one side and sockets the other. These are found in a lot of industrial equipment across many industries, for us they were used in the audio world. We worked with 19" rack sub-frame based systems which used male pins on the backplane and these connectors were used for each of the balanced signal paths (+ Gnd -), providing a very versatile and quickly 'reconfigurable' signal path changes.
