Another ceramics maker that isn't heard much from these days. The company began around the late 1880's, working from Fenton, Stoke On Trent. They temporarily closed during WWII and restarted in 1946 but changes were afoot and the company was acquired by Lawleys Limited in 1948

E HUGHES & CO. - Side Plate

Circa 1940's - probably towards the end of the 1940's because the backstamp does not have FENTON within the globe but instead has the word CHINA

Pattern: Unknown

Hand painted

Artwork design features Pink, Purple & Blue rose or primrose flowers arranged in repeating pattern of garlands around the side plate edge. The outer scalloped rim has been Gold gilded as is also a central ring where the saucer would sit.

The base colour is White, not a bright White - more like an "Off White"

This china is translucent, meaning that if held up to a bright light source you can see shadows of your fingers through the sides.

DIMENSION: 153mm diameter

BACKSTAMP DETAILS:

Artists mark is not visible but the gilder's mark (///) is to the side of the backstamp (not shown in the photograph above)

CONDITION:

USED

CLEAN

NO crazing (dry & wet tested and examined - quite frankly amazing after 80+ years)

NO cracks

NO chips

NO fleabites

NO discolouration to the artwork

NO wear is apparent to the artwork

Topside of the side plate I can see one tiny little Black "dot" on the background which I was not able to shift even with cleaning.

Gold gilding is in very good condition and even when viewed very closely, I cannot see any signs of excessive wear or Gold "flaking".

USED Exactly as described
