BACKGROUND:

One of the most successful glassware manufacturers in Australia, the company was founded in 1915, then known as Australian Crystal Glass Company Ltd, until it amalgamated with another company and became known as The Crown Crystal Glass Works Ltd. From 1963 the company underwent a number of ownership and name changes, finally becoming known as Crown Corning Ltd, an American company. Finally, it all came to end in 1988 with the closing of the business.

They operated out of Sydney and also later opened facilities in Christchurch NZ, producing a very extensive range of glass types ranging from pressed glass, cut glass and crystal.

If ever you are thinking of collecting anything that was produced by Crown Crystal, be it their Pyrex, pressed and cut glassware or the extensive crystal range, take a look HERE and you will gain an appreciation of how large their catalogue of products was.

We have three items of Crown Crystal Pink depression glasswares, all of the same pattern, each is being offered separately OR if more than one item is purchased an automatic discount comes into play.

DEPRESSION GLASS

No, it will not make you depressed! ... but the description comes from the advent of the glass type during the Great Depression years in the 1930's. Mostly, but not exclusively, coloured glass with Pink and Green being most often surviving the last 95 years but other colours were produced.

Depression glass was made to a "price point" and aimed at a marketplace which had very little money to spend ... because of this, Depression glass is usually "thinner" than later glasses and often has small blemishes such as bubbles in the glass or even scratches. This type of glassware is becoming quite difficult to find, particularly in good condition, as in later years many people just threw away their pretty Depression glasswares.

Probably one of the most well known sources for Depression glassware is USA and you can find many of these items still being offered for sale but my wife (THE collector) only wanted to have "Dinky Di" Australian produced Depression glass in her house! Many of the items have already found new homes, including the beautiful Melon carnival glass vases, so these Pink items will probably be the last that we are likely to find in the glass cabinets.

They are offered as individual items and the wanted item(s) needs to be selected in the little box on this page. If more than one piece is wanted, just check that box and an automatic discount will be applied. Take all three items and the discount increases even further ... we want these to find a new, appreciative home to reside in!

CROWN CRYSTAL (Sydney Australia) - Depression Glass Items (as listed below and offered separately)

Glass colour: Rosaline Pink

Pattern name: Mirrors & Stars

Circa 1930's ~ 1940's

This is a very delicate Pink and actually the appearance of the colour does depend upon the light being used. For example, some of the photographs were taken using direct sunlight and others indoors and the colour appearance varies slightly between the two settings. Although there is no photograph showing this, when these are viewed inside under a fluorescent lamp, they take on an almost Pink - Orange appearance!

ITEM 1:

Creamer Jug

NO manufacturer stamping or other markings, identified from the Crown Catalogue

Crown catalogue #2960

Pattern: Mirrors & Stars

Colour: Rosaline Pink

Pressed glass (seams are visible)

90mm height x 60mm diameter mouth

Wide easy to pour spout

CONDITION:

USED

Very good overall

NO cracks

NO chips

NO "rough" edges

Expected tiny air bubble or two within the glass - this is normal

A couple of small, short scratches on one side - again it is quite normal for this to occur

Two distinct "seams" are visible, these result from the manufacturing technique.

WEIGHT: 258g

This weight is important because original Depression glass is lighter than later reproductions due to the thinner glass walls.

ITEM 2:

Lidded Butter Plate

NO manufacturer stamping or other markings, identified from the Crown Catalogue

Crown catalogue #2940

Pattern: Mirrors & Stars

Colour: Rosaline Pink

Pressed glass (seams are visible)

Base Plate: 148mm diameter with a 90mm diameter inner rim - this holds the butter onto the plate and the lid in place

Top fitting lid: 108mm outside diameter x 75mm height (including the hexagonal shaped handle on the crown)

CONDITION:

USED

Very good overall, in fact amazing as these lids often get chipped after years of use - this lid is NOT chipped at all.

NO cracks

NO chips - not even tiny ones!

NO "rough" edges

Expected tiny air bubble or two within the glass on both items - this is normal

NO scratches observed on these pieces

NO damage to the crown hexagonal handle - this often can be damaged from careless use

WEIGHT: 419g

This weight is important because original Depression glass is lighter than later reproductions due to the thinner glass walls.

ITEM 3:

Sugar Bowl

Two handled

Open (not designed for a lid)

NO manufacturer stamping or other markings, identified from the Crown Catalogue

Crown catalogue #4232

Pattern: Mirrors & Stars

Colour: Rosaline Pink ***

*** Although this is Roseline Pink colouring, it gives the appearance of being a shade deeper in colour than the other two items. Just ever so slightly you can see that the colour is not identical and here is a photograph of the two colours side by side.

We assume that coloured glass production, particularly as this was considered "low cost glassware", did not pay great attention to the shades of colouring! I have even checked the glass wall thicknesses and all three items measure 5.1mm, this Sugar Bowl is no thicker than the other two items.

Pressed glass (seams are visible)

70mm height x 80mm diameter mouth

CONDITION:

USED

Very good overall

NO cracks

NO chips

NO "rough" edges

Expected tiny air bubble or two within the glass - this is normal

NO scratches to the glassware observed.

Two distinct "seams" are visible, these result from the manufacturing technique.

WEIGHT: 277g

This weight is important because original Depression glass is lighter than later reproductions due to the thinner glass walls.
