WEDGWOOD - Jewellery Box (with lid)

Blue Jasperware

Circa 1950's (estimated)

Design name: Aurora

White neoclassical relief decoration

The primary decoration is on the top of the lid ... meet the Greek goddess, Aurora! She is the goddess of Dawn, the first to wake and brings dawn across the sky.

Aurora is driving her chariot and she is wearing a half moon diadem in her hair and flying classical robes. Her small chariot is pulled to the left across a cloud by two rearing horses.

The rim of the lid is finished with a continuous band of leaves and flowers.

The base of the jewellery box has various reliefs, all depicting cherubs partaking in various activites.

DIMENSIONS:

This jewellery box is "Kidney" shaped

80mm diameter (at the widest point) x 58mm height

WEIGHT: 175g

BACKSTAMP DETAILS:

(Impressed/stamped into the clay but VERY DIFFICULT to read)

WEDGWOOD ®

MADE IN

ENGLAND

The lid also has a stamping, on the underside there is a single letter which looks like a Y

This type of stamped impression underneath dates from the period 1908 ~ 1969 so the true year of manufacture could be anywhere in this time period, although we 'favoured' 1950's as most likely based on where we know this piece of jasperware came from.
