HISTORY:

Another interesting example of Carlton Ware from England.

This is a condiment pot and intended as a "souvenir product" way back in the 1950's. Designed as a takeaway souvenir from visiting the famous Devil's Bridge in Wales, with fine artwork of the bridge(s) and a (quite out of character but very Art Deco style) stand of Daffodils! The latter is painted in an Art Deco style.

Those letters DYDD-DA are hand painted onto the lid and around the side of the pot - what does it mean? In Welsh it is saying "Good Day" - Wales has a very interesting and difficult to understand language - many tourists make a visit to the little village called Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysil - imagine if you lived there and someone asked you "So where do you live?"

Lastly, but not least, the decoration and artwork have all been created by hand and what a skilled hand was at work here. Looking closely at the top of the bridge, the fence line is so so small and yet still very finely detailed - impressive but then Carlton Ware was well known for both their innovative designs and high quality of workman (women) ship.

Carlton Ware

MADE IN ENGLAND

'TRADE MARK'

The artist "mark" is just below and to the left of the main backstamp

Noticeable is the condition of the backstamp, it is as though it has "soaked" into the ceramic before firing - quite blurry and indistinct unless viewed with a magnifying glass.

COSMETIC CONDITION:

NO chips at all

NO cracks

NO missing pieces!

NO fleabites

NO degradation of the colours, vivid and medium (not high) gloss to the glazing.

You may notice the light Brown(ish) coloured band around the body of the pot. That is part of the art design and NOT discoloured ceramic.

Inside the pot is just slightly discoloured but it has been sterilised.

The lid is the same although less discoloured but again, sterilised.
