Although VHS became the domestic standard for domestic video use, Beta was considered a superior format (although not successful in the consumer arena) and Betacam SP was a standard introduced to the broadcast industry around 1986 and it was the professional analog video standard used in any broadcast or pro video facility of the day.

Make no mistake, this is an OBSOLETE standard but many collectors and enthusiasts still like the play around with the monster machines such as the Sony Betacam PVW series but these tapes are also compatible with all Betacam SX equipment which was the digital machine family introduced by Sony in 1996
